Rumors of snowy owl sightings in Wisconsin were enough for me to extend my trip home for the holidays and hope that I might get a chance to find one. I received a tip on a location where a snowy was spotted a few weeks ago and decided that was my best chance. I was not confident at all that I would see one, but a couple of days in the frozen windy marsh proved to be beyond worth it. Just after sunset I saw this beautiful snowy owl perched on the top of an old dead tree. Its back facing me, so focused on the ground that I feared it might never look back at me and I'll have to leave with only a photo of what appeared to be a headless owl... thankfully the bird was kind enough to oblige me with a quick over the back glance with its piercing yellow eyes. A few moments later it spotted something more interesting than myself and disappeared into the tall grasses. Very cool to have the opportunity to see this rare arctic visitor so far south.

I live in Madison, Wisconsin, but when I lived more north in Poynette, my Aunt and I saw a snow owl while driving. They are very beautiful and have become one of my favorite birds. (Besides the Great Horn Owl)

this is a beautiful photo! ^0^ I really like how the markings on the owl's wings contrast against the snow! What really stuck out most to me in this photo though, was the owl's eyes. In the whole photo, everything seems to be a shade of white, black, or grey (I love all of those colors ^-^), then I just looked up to the bird's eyes, and it frightned me for a moment! They just really popped out against the white background. ^-^ great!
