Rumors of snowy owl sightings in Wisconsin were enough for me to extend my trip home for the holidays and hope that I might get a chance to find one. I received a tip on a location where a snowy was spotted a few weeks ago and decided that was my best chance. I was not confident at all that I would see one, but a couple of days in the frozen windy marsh proved to be beyond worth it. Just after sunset I saw this beautiful snowy owl perched on the top of an old dead tree. Its back facing me, so focused on the ground that I feared it might never look back at me and I'll have to leave with only a photo of what appeared to be a headless owl... thankfully the bird was kind enough to oblige me with a quick over the back glance with its piercing yellow eyes. A few moments later it spotted something more interesting than myself and disappeared into the tall grasses. Very cool to have the opportunity to see this rare arctic visitor so far south.

That's what nature photography is all about: creating chances and grabbing them...
You sure did both!

Nate,
I remember when I first read your profile on DeviantArt you simply listed 'Patience' as your tools of the trade. Outstanding example.
Toni.

beautiful shot. there's actually been a continent-wide eruption of Snowies this year. something to do with a population boom forcing their natural range to expand. I just saw my first in Chicago last week, and an injured one was picked up in Champaign (central IL).

Nice shot! Really simple yet effective composition. And how cool is that to be able to see one of these guys in the wild (and so close to home at that).
