Description
Assalaamu alaikum [peace be to you],Muslims all over the world use the Islamic form of greeting, "Assalaamu alaikum", which means "peace be to you". The very wording helps generate a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It is also common in its shorter and longer forms* to all Muslim communities wherever they happen to be. Thus, when two Muslims meet who are total strangers to each other, the moment they use this greeting, they immediately feel that they have common grounds, even when they do not speak each other's languages.
The common figure between Christianity and Islam is the prophet Jesus -peace be upon him- (Eesa in Arabic), and since there are many Christians visiting my page, I'd like to take Jesus -peace be upon him- as an example. since both Muslims and Christians say they love him and follow his teachings.
How did Jesus greet people?
the prophet Jesus -peace be upon him- often extended the greeting: "Peace be upon you". Jews also use this same greeting but they say it in Hebrew; “Sholom Aleichem”. Notice the similarities in both Arabic and Hebrew. Also the common respected response to this greeting in both faiths is: “and on you be peace": in Arabic "wa Alaikum Assalaam", and in Hebrew “Aleichem Sholom”.
Let's see some Biblical verses where Jesus -peace be upon him- used this greeting:
New Testament (Luke 24:36)
New Testament (Luke 10:5)
New Testament (John 20:19)
New Testament (John 20:21)
New Testament (John 20:26)
Jesus -peace be upon him- taught his disciples to offer the greeting of “Peace”.
Who continues this practice to this day?
.......
Jesus -peace be upon him- was a great human and a great teacher. if you love him, you should learn from his teachings and apply them in your life.
I, as a Muslim, say that I love Jesus -peace be upon him- (and all prophets of the God). and I proudly follow his teachings and say "peace be to you" when I greet.
Among the Other greetings found in the Bible:
"God be gracious to you" (Genesis 43:29) and "The Lord be with you" (Ruth 2:4)
*The different forms of the Greeting:
More on "Assalaamu alaikum":
I hope this was beneficial
I do not believe The Bible to be the literal word of The God. I simply quoted what is supposed to be the saying of Jesus -peace be upon him- since some of the readers of my articles are Christians and follow the Bible. this might be helpful for them. and also helpful for Muslims who don't know much about the Bible.
please do let me know if I made any mistakes in quoting
Wassalaamu alaikum

Sorry, I didn't really mean your artwork in particular, just manga featuring Muslims in general. If everybody who drew Muslims in manga drew characters as diverse as the ones in your gallery, I probably wouldn't see the problem.

I haven't seen a lot of manga depicting muslims and I guess this answer is pretty late (sorry^^") but maybe because manga are usually drawn black/white and coloring something white (aka not coloring it) is easer than coloring it grey - just an asumption

Assalamualaikum~
I have one particular question about the Greet.....
I learn from the Muslim Club from our school that non-Muslims can use "Assalamualaikum" to greet their Muslim friends but the Muslim friend cannot reply with "Waalaikumsalam" because the Head Club said that "Waalaikumsalam" is what we reply when the one greeting us is a Muslim so we cannot reply a non-Muslim's greet with "Waalaikumsalam". I'm not so sure if what he said was right or wrong....
So I went to read your other articles about the Greet. In the first article that I read, "and that this greeting should only be used among Muslims and not for other nations", which made me doubt what the Head Club told us about non-Muslims can use "Assalamualaikum" when they want to greet their Muslim friends. On the second article, I learned that "Waalaikumsalam" means "and upon you be peace", which made me confused. "Waalaikumsalam" only means "and upon you be peace" so why can't we reply with "Waalaikumsalam" to our non-Muslim friends?
I think it's actually 2 questions.....
1. Can non-Muslim use "Assalamualaikum" to greet their Muslim friends?
2. If so, can we actually reply a non-Muslim's greet with "Waalaikumsalam"?

1. Can non-Muslim use "Assalamualaikum" to greet their Muslim friends?
Yes. they can. if they want.
2. If so, can we actually reply a non-Muslim's greet with "Waalaikumsalam"?
To my knowledge, yes, you can reply them with "Wa alaikumussalaam". I read somewhere that a Muslim can't start greeting non-Muslims with 'Assalaamu alaikum". but if a non-Muslim is the one who starts greeting you, then you can answer "Wa alaikumussalaam" or 'Wa Alaikum" (which means, "and on you")
and Allah knows best.

assalamualaikum..
i would like to add my opinion on the matter of QUESTION 2..
A muslim is encouraged to reply "Waalaikum" which means "Upon you." when encountering these situations..
SITUATION 1
- if the non-Muslim who greeted you, and he/she really wishes you peace, then you already wishes peace upon him/her as well..
SITUATION 2
- if the non-Muslim greeted you with the intention of mocking or such, then by replying "Waalaikum", the mockery is returned to him/her...
Allah the Almighty knows best his servants hearts..
Waallahualam...

As Catholics we often say "Peace be with you" to each other And the response is "And with your spirit", or "and also with you". It is also said several times in Mass (our church service), and there is also a part where we stop to say it to those around us.
Very nice drawing, too.

When I go to my friend whose mother is muslim, I always greet her with "Assalaamu alaikum, arkadashim", where Arkadashim is a multi-purpose Turkish word, in this case meaning "madam". I've done so ever since you taught me about it ^^

not at all. I believe there is nothing upsetting when someone wants to learn something new.
homosexuality in Islam...hmmm, well, short answer is that it's a sin and we are ordered (by the God) to avoid sin.
is there anything specific you'd like to know about it?

Sakura136 In reply to Nayzak [2012-02-13 00:28:50 +0000 UTC]
Well, not really.I mean, just the general opinion : As for christian, they are not very sure if homosexuals are sinners and should to hell and bla, bla, bla or if they are a-ok and God love everyone whatever sexuality and cetera.Well,it was because i wanted to have some people be gays or lesbians or bi since my comic is about tolerance and well, since homosexuals are a minority,i tough it would be a good idea ^^'' (at first,i wanted to put a religious lesbian,i wasn't sure for the religion but i'm a bit unsure about her so i don't know :/) and the thing that confused me the most is that in the majority of Islamic country, homosexuality is a crime (some of them can be hangeg.Poor guys...) and there were awful rumors saying you hated gays (i should know it was fake but there was just this tiny doubt inside my head...i'm sorry for thinking that, really!) i was scared that it would be offensive,so i tough that asking you would be a good idea! ^^ so you know,i just wanted to know how muslims is toward homosexuals so that i could picture Srania (one of the main character,a muslim women) more clearly toward some of the aformentionned homosexuals i wanted to add ^^

Nayzak In reply to Sakura136 [2012-02-13 00:52:41 +0000 UTC]
Alright, in Islam, we believe that homosexuality is considered a deviant behavior that the God ordered us to avoid. we have learned a lesson from what happened to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah who angered the God and disobeyed his orders.
since homosexuality is considered a sin in Islam, a homosexual person can't be considered a good example of a Muslim (same with drunkards, thieves, adulterers, liars, murderers, since drinking alcohol, adultery lying, killing... are considered sins) a sin is also considered a crime. some sins are punishable by law, and others are punishable in the hereafter.
what you see in the so called Muslim countries is not necessarily what Islam dictates. many of these countries are not ruling by the true Islamic laws.
We Muslims don't say that every homosexual will go to Hell. as the final judgment will be done by the God alone. and he stated clearly that his mercy reaches everyone, as long as they don't join partners in worship with the God. so even a homosexual person may get God's mercy.
But we do not hate homosexuals simply because they choose to be homosexuals. we Muslims follow the rule "to you be your way, to me be mine". our way is Islam. and we believe everyone is free to choose their way. and they will be accountable for their actions. if a person wants to be homosexual, let them be.
Now how do Muslims treat homosexuals. that depends on the Muslims. some of them may be indifferent. some may try to avoid them and stay away from them. some may be hostile to them. I personally don't care much. as long as a person respects me for what I am, I respect them for what they are and don't care about their sexuality. it's their business, not mine. but tolerance doesn't mean I support their way of life. tolerance simply means I respect them in spite of the differences and disagreement that might be. so, I don't hate homosexual people.
I let you know that having a Muslim homosexual character in your story may offend some Muslims who could see your representation as corrupting the image of Islam. so it's better to avoid that.
if the homosexual character is not a Muslim. the best behavior of the Muslim character is that they would respect the other character without trying to be too close with them.
I think if you try to represent each character in a positive way, you will make a good story without offending anyone.
I hope this was helpful
if you have specific situations where you'd like to know what would a Muslim do, I can try to help.
Peace be to you

Thanks for the enligthening help! ^^ (and again,i'm very sorry to have believed a little bit to these rumors...i'm quite naive,i think ^^'' it's something i try to overcome)
Also,in the comic two others main character (a man and a girl) have some issues that are sins,i think,in Islam : the man,for example,''really get around'' with women, tough he never hit on the muslim women (he never goes out with teenagers, married women, womens with childrens or widows, and since the muslim women is a widwow with two young childrens, well he wouldn't ask her out) and they are very good friends (taking care of each others childrens/siblings when one of them have problems, for example) but i'm not sure how she should react to this,so most of the time i just make her looking at the sky in exasperation or face-palming xD
As for the teenager (well, she nearly 18 but i call her teenager anyway) she is pretty much an alcholic (let's just say that she got a pretty horrible past she try to forget with it) but most of the time she don't drink alchol when the muslim women (srannia) is here, mostly taking energy drinks to compense.Again,i'm not sure how Srania should react,so most of the time i make her try to distract Yuki (the girl) from drinking one way or another or just to suggest that ''maybe she could try to drink less and play more with her little sister'' (yes,i know, she act pretty motherly with people ^^'' i'm not sure if it's a good thing or not...) and well, some of the people in my soon-to-be comic have some interesting quirk most of the time she try to make them talk about it or see a therapist (if it's REALLy funky stuff) or just look exasperate if it's something very silly and a bit embarassing that the kids are doing...wow,now that i look at it,my comic is pretty dark excuse-me if it's a bit hardcore ^^''

Christian traditions incorporate greetings like that in church services, too. In my (Anglican) church, there is a point before communion where the priest says "Peace be with you" or something similar depending on what prayer or liturgical, and the congregation replies "And also with you". There's also the Peace, where everyone in the congregation turns to their neighbors, shakes hands, and says something like "The peace of Christ be with you" (my church sings a song to go with it). And at the end of the service the priest often says something like "Go in peace to love and serve the Lord."
I think it's a really nice sentiment. It's interesting that such similar greetings exist across religions and cultures.
