Description
Assalaamu alaikum [peace be to you],The last Prophet of Islam, Mohammed, -peace be upon him- once said, "If any Muslim plants any plant and a human being or an animal eats of it, he will be rewarded as if he had given that much in charity."
Even if an animal eats from a plant which has been planted by man, the person will receive rewards from Allah[The God] for it. Moreover, another hadith (saying) of the prophet -peace be upon him- says: "While a man was walking on a road. he became very thirsty. Then he came across a well, got down into it, drank (of its water) and then came out. Meanwhile he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. The man said to himself "This dog is suffering from the same state of thirst as I did." So he went down the well again and filled his shoe with water and held it in his mouth and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave all his sins." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?" He said, "(Yes) There is a reward for serving any animate (living being)."
The Prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him- by the command of Allah [The God], the Exalted, taught people to be merciful and kind to all living things. Not only were humans given their rights in Islam, the animals too were given theirs.
While some people would hit their animals on the face, Islam forbids such an act. Every creation is very sensitive as far as the face is concerned. If I were to lightly tap a person on the shoulder or on the back, they would not feel offended but if I were to do the same on the face then everyone would find that offensive. Animals do too. Allah, the Exalted, realizes this and thus through Prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him- such an act was strictly forbidden.
During the times of ignorance* (Jaahilliyah - Arabia before the prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him-) people would cut the limbs of animals while they were alive. This was a disgusting act and Islam brought an end to it. Not only this but shooting at an animal who is tied was also forbidden by Prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him-.
The Prophet -peace be upon him- cursed the one who did Muthla to an animal (i e., cut its limbs or some other part of its body while it is still alive).
sadly today, we see some cruel people do this hideous act to many animals such as sharks for the bloody shark fin soup...
The Prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him- also prohibited the act of inciting animals against each other. This act is practiced today as well where cocks and dogs are caused to fight with each other and people place their bets. Not only does this become a sin for it falls under the category of gambling (which is considered a sin in Islam) but also because two animals are caused to fight against each other.
Being brutal towards animals is a grave sin in Islam. and Allah, the Exalted, will punish him who treats the animals without kindness. It is obligatory for the owner of the animal to feed it properly and care for it. Many rights have been given to animals and Muslims are required to obey these guidelines for transgression would make them sinful. While oppressing humans is wrong, Islam also teaches that oppression towards animals is wrong as well. Islam gave animals rights at a time when animal rights were not recognized. Today the world is bringing awareness towards the rights of animals whereas Islam gave them their rights more than 1400 years ago.

I've read some of your comments in this deviation and you said that touching dogs is not haram but my teachers said the opposite instead, she said that touching dogs and pigs are haram(Killing them are not allowed of course) and if we touch them, we have to wash with yellow soil(I don't know the name so I direct translated it) In other words, we are not allowed to own them. What do you think?

Assalaamu alaikum,
she said that touching dogs and pigs are haram
I have never heard of such a thing. what I know is that Touching a dog is not haram. when the dog is wet and you touch him, your hand becomes dirty so you need to clean it.
In other words, we are not allowed to own them.
again, I believe this is wrong. we are not allowed to own them for no purpose. if for example, you need a dog for hunting, guarding or for herding livestock, then it's allowed.
and Allah knows best.

I don't understand why dogs would be singled out in quran as not being ''clean''. I'm not muslim but have interest in the religion. I like what I hear about it, but this part troubles me, as I am an animal lover but dogs especially. I know at the time it was written there may have been diseases such as rabies that dogs carry, but our country is rabies free so I don't see how touching a dog is unclean (as suggested by one of the comments below). I'd be interested if anyone could enlighten me on this topic.

I don't understand why dogs would be singled out in quran as not being ''clean''.
Well, let me tell you that the information you mentioned is not in Qur'an.
first, dogs are just like other creatures of the God. they are respected in Islam. but respecting an animal doesn't always mean 'keeping it as a pet'. in Islam, it's not haram to own a dog (for a purpose), or touch a dog. it's just that some Muslims make a big deal out of it.
If I remember well, I read somewhere that there was one incident during the time of the prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him-, when some diseased dogs were harmful to the people of Madinah, so the prophet allowed the killing of the harmful dogs. but this should not be taken as a religious ruling regarding dogs. when things are taken out of context, one can reach irrational conclusions.
But dogs may be seen as unclean because they sometimes eat their own poop and vomit. that's why many Muslims prefer to avoid having a dog at home, for sanitary reasons.
In the end, I'd like to mention something just to reflect: if a Muslim went hunting, shot a bird and his dog went to catch it and then the bird died while being caught by the dog, the bird's meat is allowed. if dogs were really unclean and unwanted, then it would be haram to eat that bird.
and Allah knows best.
I hope this answers your question.

Thank you for your response, that does help. Just to note that when dogs eat their own poop it's not normal behaviour - it usually denotes a lack in their diet. It can also be a behavior disorder (eating disorder), humans get eating disorders too, like pica. It happens but it is not the norm with dogs.
It's in a dogs nature to guard its territory, so even my though my dogs are not kept for that specific reason, they are technically doing a job in that respect. I think it's very important when keeping dogs to fulfill their needs as dogs, retrievers need to retrieve, sighthounds such as salukis need to run etc otherwise you are keeping them cruelly. It fulfills their needs and gives us enjoyment, but it isn't really a job anymore. Mostly in the modern world dogs aren't used to get food anymore. Their role has evolved from that into pets.
I'm wondering also, as it says in your deviation that its considered good in the Quran to help animals. Two of my dogs are rescues, they were strays and starving when I took them home. Is it not cruel to let them starve or get run over in the streets, rather than taking them in or to rescue? One of my dogs had scars covering her and broken legs, with a gaping & infected wound. If I had not taken her in and gotten her medical treatment she could've died. Dogs are not wild animals, they are domestic animals. They need man to survive properly. Otherwise they become starving, disease ridden, and aggressive as you see with many strays. Also stray dogs actually upset the balance of nature, as do feral cats. Here in Ireland stray cats are a particularly bad problem, with many of our native bird populations are dwindling because of them. IMO, if dogs and cats do not live with humans, they should not exist at all. They have no place in nature, in the wild.
Sorry I've gone off on kind of a tangent! I have to say I really enjoy your deviations. They're helping me learn a little more about Islam. I don't practice any religion particularly but I still find it interesting. I think I would look into it more if it wasn't for the dog thing lol! Thank you for your time!

The //Quran// does not say anything about dogs being unclean.
Dogs being unclean is a part of some Sunni thought. *shrug* I've always viewed it as something more cultural rather than Islamic.

I guess what I'm wondering is, why are dogs not permitted as pets? Why are cats permitted and not dogs? I'm working towards going to veterinary college, and have researched animals in particular dogs for all my life. I work with them in an animal shelter as well as having 4 of my own at home for no particular job but as pets. I guess I would understand if it were ALL pets, but why single out dogs? There is no life threatening disease (in my country) that is zoonose from dogs to humans. You are more likely to get disease from cats.

Oh, Brother! What sad acts that were committed in Arabia before Prophet Mohammed - PEACE BE UPON HIM - came to relieve the ignorance! I never knew that such awful things happened, and I praise God/Allah that He sent The Prophet Mohammed - peace be upon him - to put an end to this!
I am still so happily surprised how much I learn from you and how deeply you change me with each piece you put onto dA to do what Prophet Mohammed did, peace be upon him! You and your glorious art dispell ignorance, and I want you to know if you never know ANYTHING else about me, you have so beautifully changed my life with your art. I understand more now, and in that understanding, I realize how much yet I still do not understand, but you have taught me to go forth and explore it in the Name of the Almight God/Allah and do so with love and readiness to accept it in my heart.
Thank you, Brother Nayzak. I am rich, I am healed, and I submit fully to the will of God Almighty, and it was with a great shove from you that I found myself walking down this particular path. I love you so dearly, peace be FOREVER upon you and your most wonderful and charitable works.

But I've got a question. You know the hadith, does it count if it's some pesky flies eating yur crops that you, in fact, would like to be rid of? or some slugs or something..... Do they fall into the category of 'animals'?

they fall in the category of harmful animals. it's allowed for us to get rid of harmful animals as long as they are harming us.

the drawing is beautiful xD it's sad how we have this beautiful teaching of being merciful on animals and all living things, and at the same time there are neglectful parents don't teach their kids that, even when they see them torturing kittens or tying dogs to trees and leaving them to starve T_T

This is a nice picture, but I think it would be better if you showed grey clouds, and for the puddles, they look opaque... I think they would have looked more realistic if you put the puddle layer on multiply or overlay, or reduced the opacity...

interesting, the story you wrote about the man and the well.
I also heard the same exact story when me and my mother was watching on youtube conference held by Islamic Research Foundation.
Yasir Qadhi also said the same story to which peace tv showed it with the title "a journey of worship". But he said that the person was a prostitute whos sin were all forgiven.
