Does death in a dream return you to reality or do you end u[ in ac coma? (Limbo)

Very great chart. Just one little error, the level 2 dreamer is actually Fischer. I just finished watching the movie and I remember that they tricked him into being the dreamer so he'd break into his own subconscious in level 3

This is beautiful.

One observation:
I don't know if you intended the concentric circles to represent time, but since each deeper level is exponentially longer than the previous one, wouldn't it be "clearer" to reverse the circles' order? Realtime would be in the center and each subsequent dream level would be larger in radius.

Either way, this is some amazing work, major props.

Neilmakesart,

This is really cool! Amazing Inception Infographic! Do you plan on making this into a print after you go through any final modifications? If so, I'm definitely buying a print.

Just wanted to point out a few things. I've seen the film 10 times on IMAX now.

You've correctly identified that Fischer had a Double Kick to get back to Level 3 Snow Fortress (Defibrillator shocks + Free Fall in Limbo (which was improvised by Ariadne and Cobb). Just want to make sure you understand that each member riding the layers back to Level 1 needed a Double Kick. Just wondering if you're aware of this. I know this would be tricky to implement into your Infographic but it's important to capture this.

During the Fischer Heist Mission, the team is not using the normal way of Kicking from one level to the next (remember, the standard way we are shown is that a Kick comes from the Level above in order to bring your subconscious to that Level above (think of the beginning dream within a dream sequence where Cobb is dunked in the tub in Saito's apartment level 1 dream and this brings Cobb's subconscious back to that level from the Saito's Palace level 2 dream).

But Since the team was heavily sedated on the 747 Airplane, they each needed a Double Kick to get back to each previous level. This was something indirectly discussed amongst the team...they had to find a way to synchronize a series of Double Kicks to the music that's played...notice that Ariadne says to Cobb in Limbo...how are we going to get Fischer back? And Cobb says, "we have to improvise....we're gonna have to come up with some kind of Kick" - so Fischer needs a Kick in Limbo and one in the Snow Fortress at the same time.

Fischer needed both the "Free Fall" Kick in Limbo (where Ariadne pushes him off the ledge) coupled simultaneously with the Defibrillator Shocks Kick that Eames sent into Fischer's body in the Snow Fortress Level 3. That is how Fischer's subconscious comes back to the Snow Fortress Level 3 (which you correctly list on the left hand side in your image).

Ariadne got her Double Kick from her "Free Fall" in Limbo coupled simultaneoulsly with the "Free Fall" Kick of the Snow fortress collapsing in Level 3 - this brought her back to Level 3 Snow Fortress momentarily before riding to the next layer.

Ariadne, Fischer and Eames get a Double Kick to get back to Level 2. The Free Fall Kick with the Snow Fortress collapse coupled simultaneously with Arthur's "Free Fall" Kick in the elevator on Level 2 is what brings them back to Level 2.

And finally, Arthur, Ariadne, Fischer and Eames all get a double Kick to get back to Level 1. The free fall Kick of the Elevator coupled with the Van hitting the water in Level 1 is what brings everyone back to Level 1.

They then hang out in Level 1 for a week since there was no planned double Kick to get back to Reality on the Airplane from Level 1 (I don't see this "haning out for one week" fact listed in your infographic after you have the Van hitting the water unless the stop watch graphic in white represents the Countdown Timers on the PASIV device on the 747 Plane....and you intend the stopwatch icon to just mean that the team waited for the timers to expire). They also had to verify that the Inception took with Fischer...that the idea was growing which it was as Fischer confirms to Eames as Browning on the riverbank after they surface from the Van. Fischer's projections are no longer a threat so they hand out for a week until the PASIV dream machine countdown timers expire, the sedative stops....and they return to conscious reality. The team are hooked to a different countdown timer than Fischer which is why they return slightly before Fischer so they have time to get the PASIV device out of Fischer's sight and to prepare his return back to reality.

Also wanted to point out that in Christopher Nolan's new book "Inception: The Shooting Script" that on page 16 and 17, there is a hand-written graph created by Nolan that shows the Linear Heist and the Parallel Escape and it has all of his hand-written notes around the graph. This will be extremely helpful for anyone trying to understand the Fischer mission. Nolan has listed Cobb as the selected Dreamer for Limbo....when Ariadne and Cobb drop to Limbo....Cobb is the Dreamer.....when Fischer and Saito drop to Limbo...their subconscious minds are also trasnported to Cobb's Limbo. The graph clearly depicts this. I purchased this Inception: The Shooting Script on Amazon and it is well worth $12 to see this graph and other drawings, concept artwork, the actual shooting script dialogue and scenes and a PASIV device appendix operating procedures.

One last thing, not sure if this can be captured, but the reason that Cobb and Saito return back to reality after Saito shoots Cobb and then himself in Limbo - is because the strong sedative that was intravenously being fed to them in reality on the plane is no longer being fed to them. Once the team gets back to the plane after the countdown timers expire on the PASIV, they remove the IV lines from both Cobb and Saito and from Fischer. So, when Saito shoots Cobb and then himself, they automatically wake on the plane - because killing yourself can bring you back to consciousness in reality if you are no longer being sedated and if all of the previous dream levels have collapased...which is the case when Saito kills Cobb and himself in Limbo (note: hypothetically, if they were still being sedated at the time when Saito kills Cobb and then himself in Limbo....they would have remained in Limbo after trying to kill themselves).

Lastly, Cobb and Saito's minds are fully intact when they come back to reality on the plane. It is not "scrambled egg" to uses Eames's expression. Reason: an unspoken dream rule in this world is that if one is able to recognize that Limbo is not real, then when they return to reality, their mind is fully intact and normal...which is the case for Cobb and Saito. Cobb is able to remember why he was in Limbo...what he had to remind Saito of.....that this world is not real...and to come back....come back....

Hope this helps. Looking forward to your reply.

Don't take offense at this because I found your comment extremely interesting, but in your opinion I would like to know why you think Cobb is in reality when there are two very key reasons (though one could be bad directing maybe or just the audience's lack of knowledge of time)... a. His top never stopped spinning. and b. His kids hadn't aged at all.

I think you're right when you say if they were still being sedated at the time when Saito kills Cobb and then himself in Limbo... they would've remained in limbo"

There's also heavy indication that Cobb died in his own reality in which he fell into a deeper Limbo and found Saito (when Mal killed him).

Just curious about your thoughts :3 It's an interesting film particularly to someone who dreams every single night, so..! Discussion :3

CobbisinReality In reply to katsu [2010-10-10 04:35:23 +0000 UTC]

Katsu,

I've actually discussed the fact that Cobb's kids have aged at the end of the film on other Inception forums on the web. I can give you the links if you'd like to read. But, in short, both Phillipa and James are older at the end. They have both grown in height. I have seen the film 10 times so I've closely examined the kids throughout the film and all of the glimpses we are given of them. You need to watch the film a few times. I would recommend seeing it about 5 or 6 times on IMAX. When Cobb has his flashback scenes of his children when he is dreaming (especially when he replays the moment when he had to flee for his life and leave his children), notice the height of both kids, their hair and the clothing they are wearing. At the end of the film, they have grown in height, their hair is different and they are wearing different clothing - look at the patterns in the clothing on how they are slightly different - look at the hem line of Phillipa's dress - how it is a different pink dress - a longer one since she is older now. Also, the most important fact that proves the children are older at the end is that if you look at the end credits and look at the Cast and Crew detail, there are two sets of child actors. There were the younger Phillipa and James (played by two actors) and then there was an older set of children (played by completely different actors). Go to IMDB and look up the cast on Inception. Claire Geare played Phillipa at 3 years old. Taylor Geare played Phillipa at 5 years old. Magus Nolan played James at 20 months old. Jonathan Geare played James at 3 years old. So, basically 2 years had gone by since Cobb last saw his children.

Now, as far as the top not spinning, I could write a book on this one but my opinion is twofold: first, the top spinning at the end is not a clean spin...the top is wobbling...it is not spinning like the way it did when we saw it spin in Saito's Palace or in Mal's safe - every time you saw the top wobbling or starting to wobble, the top fell. Think of each time Cobb performed a reality check spin when he woke out of dream. He was checking to see if he was in reality since he's lost his graps for what is real - but the top always wobbled. You can infer, given this, that the wobbbling top at the end topples over after it cuts to black. Second, I have argued that the purpose of having the film end with the spinning top has to do with Nolan attempting to perform an Inception on the audience. He wants to see if the audience can take the bait like Robert Fischer....and end up like Robert Fischer - being duped and tricked into believing a set of false beliefs. Are you going to believe that Nolan spent 30 years of his life creating a film about a guy who is dreaming somewhere from the first frame of the film to the end of the film and that reality is never shown or that Cobb ends up stuck in Limbo with Saito and never makes it out? Or, are you going to resist this Inception that Nolan is trying to pull, and believe that Nolan made a film about what has fascinated him over the course of his life - about a wold that actually contains this dream technology - where extractions and inceptions are performed and where Cobb is in reality and struggling with his fractured mind - where he is trying to find a way back to his children in reality and let go once and for all of the deep guilt that he feels for the Inception he pulled on his wife while they were exploring and getting lost in Pure Creation.

I think that after you see the film multiple times, it becomes apparent that the reality scenes are reality and that Cobb is in Reality at the end.

And about your comment about Cobb possibly dying in his own reality and going to a deeper Limbo...there is no deeper Limbo - there is only one Limbo - it's Cobb's Limbo. Please purchase the new Christopher Nolan book "Inception: The Shooting Script" and please go to page 16 and 17 where you will see the linear heist and parallel escape graph depiction by Nolan. You can clearly see that there is only one Limbo and that Cobb is the dreamer of Limbo according to Nolan. Both Saito and Fischer drop down to Cobb's limbo (since they are sharing the dream on the 747 plane - they can all get to Cobb's Limbo) - when Cobb and Ariadne go to Limbo from the Snow Fortress, Cobb selects himself as the dreamer....once they arrive there, the Limbo that is deep in his mind reappears and is crumbling and right when they get there, his mind immediately projects Mal...and Mal finds Fischer. I could go on...but I've already said all of this elsewhere.

Hope this helps.
