IHS Official Storyline - Part 1 - Chapter 8

FIRST  | PREVIOUS  | NEXT

The afternoon was clear but frozen during this autumn day. Previously, Greg and Mat have decided to try some of the new horses, soon arrived in the stables. Because they decided to work together once, their choice fell on Kara and Bast, the new Zlesdin mare and the new andalusian stallion, to work on dressage discipline. The session was supposed to go on for only thirty minutes, but finally, the session was about to last one hour. They started by a classical warm-up, trying the gaits of the horses, their reactivity to the aids and just to have a little look on their characters. In the beginning, both guys was worried about the fact of trying Kara with another horse, because she was pretty dominant with other horses and have a pretty bad character, but finally, even if Kara reveal hesrelf like a stubborn mare, hard to motivated to work, she looks to absolutely don't care about Bast's presence. Maybe because the stallion was pretty quiet and respectful with the mare. That's only after long minutes that Greg finally find a good way to work with her and she reveal herself like talented after all. About Bast, Mat find a generous horse, who have absolutely nothing to care about the fact of the presence of a mare in the indoor arena during the same time of him. But, after long minutes to try the capacities of the andalusian stallion, Greg noticed the fact that Mat's face become more closed and unsatisfied than before. The eveneting rider decided to question his friend to find the reason of his discontenment.

"Hey, Mat ! Any problem ? You don't look satisfied at all."

The professionnal dressage rider, who was doing a pirouette with the stallion, finisehd his movement and stopped the boy.

"I am not. This horse have a big problem. I have to do all this riding eduction again."

Greg look at his mate with surprise and after, launch a look at the horse. He didn't notice any problem in the stallion attitude, well, the motionless one. He look back to Matthew.

"A problem ? I didn't notice anything bad. Bast seems to move correctly, he look like an energic and cool horse to work. What's wrong ?"

Matthew sightet and stroke the neck of the spanish stallion.

"He his, but you're wrong. Have you look closely this horse when I ride him just before our conversation ?"

Greg do a little grimace.

"Not really, sorry. I was focused to keep Kara's motivation on and trying to keep her in the right exercise movement."

Matt asked to the stallion to take the trot.

"Then, look, and tell me if you notice something wrong when I stopped."
"Ok."

After one circuit of the indoor arena, Greg notice something wrong with the horse, obviously. The global attitude of the horse... Even if Matthew ride him with a double-bit bridle, the reins of the dressage rider was looses. But the andalusian stallion have a totally closed attitude, in his head, neck, back and movements. After few minutes, Matthew take the galop and then, the problem was obvious. The dressage rider finally stopped Bast in the side of Kara and Greg.

"So, have you notice something ?" asked Matthew to Greg.

Greg shaked his head to approve.

"Yup. It seems like this boy was worked before with a rollkür method. He's totally closed in his global attitude and so, his movements are limited. Even when you asked him to low his head and to become slack, he truly low his head, but he stay closed." answered Greg.

"You're totally right. So, I knew the fact of before he come here, this wonderful stallion was in a training stable in germany, to become a real dressage-horse. I know a lot of german riders who are corrects, and I thought that the fact of the International Riding Federation forbid this technic and punish the using of it had totally discourage professionnal riders to use it, but it seems that finally not." said Matthew, with a lot of bitterness in his voice.

Greg grimaced again. He look with sympathy to his friend.

"These kind of stables have to close fastly. I hope you'll come up to make him forgetting this bad habit." Greg said, pointed the stallion by his chin.
"I have good hope about. He's young, I just have to work him hard to make him forget. I'll focuse on him for the rest of the month."
"You do right."
Greg's approval. "We can ride your horses, me, Eryn and Vitany to make some time for you."
"Eryn and Vitany ? But they are not dressage riders !"
says Matthew in an exclamation.
"I know." answered Greg. "Me neither. But I'm convinced that that can be only good for these girls to work dressage on a truly dressage horse."
"Hmmmm..." Mat seems to thought during few seconds. "You're correct, that's an excellent idea. Let's do that."

The boys decided to keep the both horses back to their stables. They go down and take their way to unsaddle the horses. Under the indoor arena and the grooming arena, Matthew interrupted the thoughts of Greg.

"By the way ! Call me back to say to Cae to never by a horse who come from Bast's working stable again. We have to not cheer on their practices."
Greg smiled to his friend. "I'll do. Count on me."

Then, the guys continue their way to the stables.

Nice picture and story! I guess the Rollkür discussion is everywhere... unfortunately, many successful professional riders don't want to see what they are doing wrong, as long as they are successful with it... And the FEI does not seriously control what methods the riders are doing, I fear...

Thanks !

Yeah, you juste point exactly where all is wrong, that the fact of international riders don't want to admit that this technic is bad. And sadly, the international judges for dressage competitions don't admit it either. (I don't know if that's still the case). Just have to see how high the famous Totlias was noted by judges... While everybody know how this stallion was trained with rollkür by Edward Gal. That was some years ago, and as I know, because of him, the FEI have made some rules about this dressage technic and some punishments if a rider is seen using this method... But honestly, I was in a show jumping international competition in France this week-end, and as I seen, some riders absolutely don't care about

The problem in general (in my modest mind, I haven't the entire science ^^) come to the fact that dressage high level is more appreciated when people see a rider controlling a real warmblood, massive and full of energy, which is regular in his gaits, controlled and which don't have any expression during all the dressage test... And the rollkür help to obtain it, by forced the horse to be in a tight position. The lightness riding isn't appreciated in dressage... They prefer rythm and control.

I guess you're right that the whole story of Totilas raised awareness of what's wrong with the competitions... It has not only been Edward Gal but also the rider and trainers he had afterwards (I forgot the name...). They completely ruined the horse. I remember seeing Totilas' last entry at a competition and even though I was really bad at seeing lameness in a horse, I could easily tell that something was wrong with the horse, movements were weird.
There is an interview with Isabell Werth on the internet, that is quite shocking. They ask her about rollkür and she not only admits to use it as a training method, she also says that she doesn't understand why that should be wrong. Makes me wonder if the amateur riders are the only ones who look at all the studies about what damage rollkür can cause in the horse.

You're absolutely right, there is no lightness any more. Just exaggerated, abrupt movements to make it look more impressive. It's so sad... I always liked dressage, but when I got to know more about it and how it should actually work, watching Grand Prix competitions turned from "Oh, this looks so cool!" to constant "What the hell are they doing there? Can someone shove that person off of that horse, please?"
