█ Hotaru is a friend to all he meets. A young man despite his appearance, he ventured far and wide to learn new things and meet new people. No matter where he goes, Hotaru brings warmth and radiance and as long as there’s a hot meal, a nice mug of ale and a roof over his head, he doesn’t mind wherever he ends up. The world is Hotaru’s family, and he treats people as such unless they give him a reason not to.

█ Always one for fun, laughter and learning, Hotaru travels the lands of Emphest in search of something that even he himself isn’t sure of yet. Ever curious, ever wise beyond his years, there is always something he wishes to know or learn how to do – and when he sets his mind to it, come hell or high water, he will accomplish it.

█ Despite his build and his knowledge of combat, Hotaru is a man that hates fighting with a passion. He doesn’t like being involved in people’s personal disputes or battles, or being dragged into larger ones. The one time, however, that Hotaru will fight without hesitation, is if an innocent person is in danger. He can’t stand the trained slaughtering the weak or untrained and will always step in if he sees or hears of that happening. When he does so, Hotaru is a ruthless and logical opponent and seems very far removed from the loving person so many know and have come to love.

█ When faced with questions about where he came from, Hotaru is intentionally vague and usually replies with ‘somewhere very far away from here’ – or something to that effect. Very few people know where he came from or that he was born as their enemy – and those that do know can be counted on one hand and are very high ranking officers. Most of the Empha he meets see him as a regular Empha and that is exactly how he wants it to be.

█ Fists of the Phoenix
█ Rubik the gizmo

█ When forced to fight for whatever reason or another, Hotaru will – depending on the severity of the situation and who is witnessing the fight – fight either with his gizmo, Rubik or his bare hands.

█ If possible, Hotaru will always choose to use Rubik before fighting with his bare hands. Please see the Gizmo section for details on Rubik and his abilities.

█ Hotaru, when faced with a formidable enemy or in an extremely dire situation will risk exposing his origins as a Phoenix born to save whoever happens to be in trouble. As a rare Phoenix Empha that was born aflame, Hotaru has pure pyroarcane running through his veins. When he needs to, he will set his fists and feet aflame and fight like a true Phoenix should - never backing down, never surrendering - annihilating anything that happens to stand between him and whatever he’s trying to protect.

█ Hotaru never kills when he has a choice and often it is this softness that gets him into tight predicaments with his enemies. He's never willing to take a life.

█ Rubik
█ A floating, semi-intelligent cube that has three by three rows of smaller cubes which make up its body.
█ Being only semi-intelligent, Rubik isn’t exactly the smartest of gizmos. He does what he is told when Hotaru tells him to, but at all other times he is the source of many, many horrible puns, bad jokes and extraordinarily unintelligent questions.
█ Often referred to as ‘Chuckle Head’ by Hotaru because Rubik is usually always laughing at something.
█ Rubik loves playing with kids and usually gets horribly distracted by them.
█ Likes to identify itself as male.

█ Rubik can twist and change his surfaces around at will. All surfaces on each side bar one are marked with odd types of engravings. The one surface that is unmarked is what looks like a hole, or jack in the middle of each side.

█ Rubik changes himself to perform multiple functions based on Hotaru’s needs, but cannot perform any tasks unless he is charged with Hotaru’s pyroarcane. When the charge has run out, Hotaru must input more pure pyroarcane, or Rubik will not be able to perform even the simplest of tasks.

█ General overview of Rubik’s functions:
█ Shield function: Converts charge into a semi-solid, vibrating wall of flame. It only lasts a few moments before it is dissipated and cannot nullify damage – can only prevent a hit landing for a few moments and nothing more.
█ Cannon function: Fires a short range surge of pyro or electroarcane at targets in a cone shaped blast.
█ Laser function: Fires a long range beam of electroarcane at one target.
█ Heater function: Used to keep warm and cook with.
█ Battery function: Used to convert pyroarcane into a power source for other gizmos/inventions/machines that Hotaru has created.
█ Light function: Used as a lantern or wide area lighting device.
█ Thruster function: Utilises charge to allow Rubik enough power in an emergency to carry a person away to a safe distance.
█ Converter function: Takes pyroarcane and converts it into other energy types for various uses.
█ Game function: Markings on Rubik’s sides allow for easy or very complex puzzle games to be played with him. Games range from twisting him to make all the same coloured markings line up, to playing Simon-says type repeating games.█ Depending on the energy expenditure, Rubik’s charge runs out quickly or slowly. More strenuous functions like Thruster, Shield, Laser and Cannon, run out after every single use (sometimes even during use). Functions like Light, Game, Heater and Battery (usually) run out much slower and last for longer.

█ Sky Wing
█ A vehicle most gyros would say was utterly insane to fly, but also incomprehensible as to why it flies at all.
█ Built around a gyro big enough to house Hotaru, Sky Wing has many rotatable concentric spheres around the central gyro and sports one long wing that attaches to the very outer most sphere.
█ Travels like a bat outta hell at speeds that have never before been seen in a flight vehicle and has a wing motion that is considered even more insane – a constant corkscrew when travelling at high speeds.
█ Uses Hotaru himself as a battery, but also has a slot for Rubik to be inserted as well.

█ Hotaru doesn’t settle down. He can’t. He is out in the field doing research for the Seekers far too often for that. Usually spends most of his time in Inns or with families that take him in when he arrives in their area.

█ Is a boisterous, affectionate and perverted drunk. Though is always a gentleman when rejected.
█ Makes tinker toys in his spare time and gives them to kids wherever he happens to be.
█ Is your best friend if you offer him a hot meal and a tankard of ale.
█ Loves telling stories and hearing them. A good yarn is one of his favourite past times.
█ Invented a bunch of weird and wonderful things. Not limited to but including the electroarcane guitar and popping mint leaf candy.
