Description Wanted to take a stab at some actual good looking backgrounds, and I used a free base on the programme and then modified it in Photoshop. I was proud of it before I actually started working on it. So here, have this crappy looking thing :/

how do you
do backgrounds
what

NesoKaiyoH In reply to HomestuckFanPoop [2014-07-16 11:02:44 +0000 UTC]

It was actually really easy, it took more time to paint it than it did to draw it, and that's what ultimately ruined it.

To you yeah, but to me it may as well be thrown away. It's way too bright, too cluttered, overdone with textures and way too 'Photoshopped'.
Thank you anyway, the compliment is much appreciated!

potatotter In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2014-07-14 03:47:39 +0000 UTC]

well uh I'd say you worked pretty well with the values actually, not too bright if you ask me. The window and most of the floor some rest to the sight. I do however think theres some vertical line formed almost in the middle of the image, The warm palette make a good atmosphere. I like the blur on the sides of the image, keeps the details inside the image, though it does look a bit odd on the leg of the table at the right. the textures aren't distracting but the rug does looks a bit uneven in that. Oh and I loved the drawings in the frames uwu, nice details! so yeah overall I really loved this piece! dont be that harsh with yourself

It's so difficult for me to see it the way other artists do XDD
I was actually trying to imitate one of Yuumei's pieces, in the way of using Sketchup and putting the background through filters to give depth and perspective. I guess I still have alot to learn yet, but I'm going to try it again, and this time, follow her tutorial more intensely, as to be honest, I do need to practice environments anyway.
thank you so much for all the kind words! It takes me a bit of a kick to see the good things sometimes, but I do appreciate it.

jejej no problemo! giving and receiving critiques is very important. Other people are usually able to see both good and bad things in your works that one does not normally notice so yeah. and oh Sketchup! yeah thats really useful for bgs. And yeah I guess you really should try it again! practice makes perfect or so they say c: I dare say this does have a very "you" style in it. Keep up the good work!!! !

NesoKaiyoH In reply to potatotter [2014-07-21 20:50:42 +0000 UTC]

I love helping out other artists, but due to my strict and perfectionist nature, I sometimes don't notice how harsh and honest I am with their work. I obviously don't mean it in bad ways, but I like to be straight to the point in telling them how they can improve. Just like I am with myself...

I'd love to become fluent in Sketchup and start creating my own backgrounds, but because of how fast it is to produce environments, and how easy it is just to paint over the top, I can't help but think it's kinda cheating in a way, considering I wouldn't be drawing it myself. On the tutorial I used by Yuumei, she said that it's a better application to use for when designing individual or complex environments that need to be drawn from several angles (such as a manga or comic)

Thank you very much!

pointing out what can be improved is really useful, yet pointing out what's well done helps motivate and well, keep up that. Going to the extreme of only praising an artwork ain't so helpful though, i guess there's a balance to find.
Yeah i saw yuumeis works on sketchup (her solar eye building is amazing), but as long as you create your enviromenti dont see why it would be cheating. It's like making the scenery for a play i guess, you spend your time making it, you have all the rights to use it as much as you wish.

I suppose so, yeah. It's hard to find that balance sometimes, especially so for an artist such as me, the way I learn is that my way of 'seeing' faults in my own and others' work is higher than my actual skill level. This could be the reason as to why I always think my stuff is so bad. It's not something that can be changed, and if it could, I would be a totally different artist in terms of attitude towards art, my style and skill level itself.
