Description
THREE years, averaging 80+ failed trips to get shots of Corfe Castle in Dorset with fog rolling around the hills. It seems to be quite rare this scene crops up according to one of the locals which is no suprise. Every time we've had fog around, i've headed to this hill and NEVER had the right conditions. Until this morning.
This is the first shot from this morning that i've decided to submit. Its not the best shot from the collection (at least for me) but its the shot that i've always wanted to get.
Its a very cliched shot and its one thats been taken time and again, or at least to a similar extent but I don't care. This shot is one i've dreamed of taking ever since I started photography. I've tried to give it my own spin with a uncommon composition, using the castle on the right third and looking out towards Poole Harbour.
Enjoy.

Brilliant shot, my friend. I can testify to the ellusive nature of mist around Corfe Castle; many a morning it has failed to turn up. But you seem to have nailed it here!

Maybe it's cliched among photographers, but I am not one, and these kind of images never fail to awe me. The hill behind the castle, that really looks like smoke pouring over it. Wonderful.

I just worked out that you did the equivalent of driving around the earth one and a half times using 4364 litres of petrol Β£5237 of petrol, not to mention the 38400 miles worth of depreciation to your car and spending 1 month and 10 days driving, now that's dedication!

Corfe is 40 miles from my house so thats 80 miles both ways. X by around 80 trips is roughly 6400 miles. Would explain some of the 74000 miles I added to my leon in the 3 years I owned it. Used to do a lot of driving mate. Have stopped this year tho.
Not quite sure how you worked out those figures or maybe just sarcasm

ah, I obviously misunderstood some of your statements, although I did double check them. For example 80 average, means 80 per year, otherwise it wouldnt be an average

I could of sworn i'd written 80 trips over three years :S

Ah we have had this convo earlier when I initially posted this as I cocked up and said 80 trips a year but corrected it. your right about average - replace that with approximately.

I spent a long 3 years waiting for these conditions. Living an hour away from corfe you never know if the fog you get at home is going to be around the castle and every trip i'd taken there when fog was around yielded bugger all in the last mile to the castle.

I really like the ethereal quality of this photo I wonder how it will look if it was cropped into a panoramic by taking out the foreground so it is mostly misty ruins and sky, really making it almost more dream-like? Just a thought

Neutron2K In reply to Acuas [2009-12-17 18:39:36 +0000 UTC]
Under normal circumstances I would crop the foreground out but unfortunatly it will destroy the feeling of the image with this particular composition. You wouldn't be able to see the bast of the hill the castle sits on and the feeling of elevation would be lost.
thanks for the input though and glad you like the shot

No problem - yeh, I do like it I see your point, I guess in my mind's eye I was seeing almost a floating castle in the clouds if you see what I mean. I guess my mind was wandering away too much there !!!

yeah looking at it i'd agree a position further forward and lower down would have simplified the subject matter and given the effect of a landscape floating in the clouds....but i understand your description of what is runnig through your head during a moment like this...its heart in the mouth panick sometimes when you realise what your seeing is unique and could well be fleeting...
once again well done justin i admire your persistence...

cheers dude. Yeah the problem with west hill on this side is no matter where you go - its in the frame. Lower down - its still in the frame despite the fact it looks like a sudden drop off in this shot - its not. Its a long gradual slope and the gorse just ruins it for the most part. Next time i'll hunt around for a better spot. My only reservation in that is that theres a tree line right at the bottom of this hill that would wind up having the tree tops in the shot and I didn't think it would be as interesting as the foreground. Kicking myself now tho. Next time i'm not taking my 'student' with me. Too many questions when i'm trying to concentrate!

sassaputzin In reply to Neutron2K [2009-12-16 17:31:07 +0000 UTC]
i understand that but your not telling me if you walked forward and used a focal length of say 50mm that you couldnt eliminate the slope? you might have to stitich a couple of shots.....
π: 0 β©: 1
Neutron2K In reply to sassaputzin [2009-12-16 18:24:47 +0000 UTC]
using a longer focal length would result in me losing the tree line at the base of the hill on which the castle stands which I wanted in the shot so I had to settle for the foreground unfortunatly.
Next time i'll go right down the bottom left hand side wheres its a lot steeper and that should solve it, but the scene won't be the same

Wonderful conditions, so much about this is nigh on flawless. You've waited so long for these conditions, and you eventually get them THIS fantastic....but the foregound detracts from what would be, without it, one of the very best shots I've seen here.
Bah, I hate myself for seeing something this good, which you've obviously worked so hard to get, and then finding fault with it...but it's so close to being one of those once-in-a-lifetime shots.
Ignore me Justin, it's bloody great whatever. Well done for the effort and the shot. Outstanding.

No i know wha tyou mean mate and every time I look at it it just bugs me more and more. The hill there is just such a bitch to work with on this side of the castle. Wherever you frame to include the base of the hill the castle sits on, the hill your standing on gets in the bloody way. Also directly below the hill is a big line of trees as well that would interfere if I could get rid of the hill from the foreground. One of those awkward places to get what you want.
I'm really kicking myself because I had planned to go back to the bottom of the hill and take a similar shot from much lower down so that the castle stood on the horizon and towered over me but my mate showed up and I was just bombarded with him asking question after questions. My filters are dirty, is that going to ruin it? Why can't I get rid of this hill from the shot. What are you shooting? Should I be over there. What grads should I use. SHUT THE HELL UP I'M CONCENTRATING MAN! lol.
Maybe they'll be a next time. Its looking promising for fog tonight. Its bloody cold out and I just need to check the weather. Glad you like it anyway mate.
