Description
First, I take no credit for this work. I only made enhancements. I just learned Photoshop yesterday and this is also my first time skinning. All credit goes to Flahorn. The style remains his copyrighted work! And no, this is not just anonther Vista skin. I'm trying to address the shortcomings of Vista skins in general.I was tired of asking for enhancements and decided to be proactive. I started with Jadeaero, which I think is the cleanest looking Vista (aero) theme.
Differences:
WinFlag start button - black button stuck out too much, no orb!
More opaque active window borders - active window needs to standout. could be more opaue but works well with minimalistic wallpapers
Transparent start panel - black too bold and too plastic
Tranparent maximixed windows caption - black too bold and too plastic
Don't get me wrong. I love black. My favorite skins are "aerial" and "Royal Vista" but folks if you're going to do styles consistency and functionality are paramount. Anyways, I think the end result of my adjustments improve upon Flahorn's excellent work . The frosted borders are cleaner than those containing a more aurora effect.
Most of my modifications were simple adjustments of saturation and/or brightness in the alpha channel. With that said, there is lots of room for improvement to Flahorn's skin. Too many to list. Rather than modifying Flahorn's work, I'll start afresh now that I undestand how skins and channels work. My work will be OPEN SOURCE complete with PSD files. My goal is to make a usable, clean Vista inspired theme for XP.

i like the original better, by Flahorn. "Jadeaero" just my opinion.
Also must agree with theese "haters" the author has dumped a lot into the work, i think theres a diff between tweaking a micosoft app of skin, and tweaking a single artists skin.\\

You'll need to install WindowBlinds. Unfortunately, it's pay software. Regular visual styles do not have transparency

I'm creating another skin. I'll keep the toolbar size in mind. I use 1600 x 1200 and I should probably test at lower resolutios.

Who cares if its a rip or not, sure he should of got permission from the original author just to be polite but thats besides the point. Its a great mod. Quite frankly i'm getting bored of all the vista rips, atleast this is something different.
If I had one minor grip about the skin though it would be that the toolbar is a bit htick for my liking but on the whole its a great theme.

Aw, let's not be so hard on Butch. Obviously, somebody put a gun to his head and made him download and apply this, so he's probably been horribly traumatized by this whole ordeal. I can actually picture him going back and forth between sobbing uncontrollably and screaming himself hoarse at his monitor.

I've made amends with Butch. My enthusiasm got the best of me when I released this skin. I have received post-release permission from Flahorn (Jadaero author) for this mod.

i think you misunderstood me. when i said "you guys are clowns" it was directed to those who think "giving permission is all you need". Let me explain a few things:
"you don't make money off of this so who cares" - this is complete nonsense. we have something called "intellectual property" and "implied copyrights". in other words, if i want to sell my work i can do so...but no one other than myself has the right to sell it or redistribute it by any means. meaning that if you redistribute someone else's work without permission, they can sue (and win) in court for it's fair market value and any other damages. if someone stole my skin aten, it would cost you in the area of $10,000 dollars. not only that, but if i do sell my work and you had previously copied it, you are now in direct violation of another companies copyright...a place you don't want to be.
"mind your own business, no one made you download this" - again, complete nonsense. skinners spend weeks/months on these projects...and when work is being stollen left and right, yes you stick up for your fellow skinners...violently if needed. if your house was broken into, stole your things, rearranged the furniture and said "thank you"...you'd be mighty pissed too. these projects require a ton of heart and soul to complete and asking permission to upload isn't much to ask. if you don't get it, sorry...you can't post...no excuses.
"it's only a mod. i gave thanks to the original author, what's the problem?" - the problem is that you didn't spend months/weeks on this project...the person you took it from did. look at it this way...you can't go steal a car from ford...say thank you...repaint it...put new wheels on it...slap your own name on it and sell it as your own. all you did is steal a car and try to take credit for it's creation...while trying to justifiy it with "i said thank you to ford so it's okay". sorry...you lose.
"you ripped this from microsoft so it's okay to rip it from everyone else" - again, bullshit. while it may not be illegal to "port" vista to windowblinds - it's certainly un-ethical. if you feel like spending the weeks/months creating your own vista/mac like images then go right ahead...you can do so. but the moment you you lift images right out of someone elses skin, you have just crossed the line. creating vista or mac "like" images falls under the "fan art" section of the copyright. while creating vista or mac like images does not give you the legal right to sell them for profit, if does give you an implied copyright over the images you created - in other words, you can't sell it...but you do "own" it as fan art.

It's perfectly acceptable for them to rip cause they believe they ARE the "scene". They're disillusioned. They honestly believe their work is 'original'. It's laughable you both believe you have been granted some magical copyright for the rips you blatantly pass as your original work. Even worse, you try to argue with ethics. At least I was honest and did not try to pass it as my work.
No more being Mr. nice. I'll rip whatever I please and there won't be any credit given. I'll be just like everyone else---change the title, change the copyright, change file names. Sue me for the millions of dollars I've made from people downloading this mod! Oh, that's right I've made exactly $0. So here's a big middle finger to Butch, critical and any cronies of the "scene". F U ALL
Thanks for leading me to the dark side. And Butch create a better skin for gosh sake. I was going to rip your skin and give you the burden of proof of trying to prove my next work was a rip of it, but it's not worth ripping. That would have been as funny as heck. PEEEZE OUT MOFOs.

It's interesting all the angst being thrown around here about mods and rips... and all this based on work that we're not really clear is OK with the people at M$. After all, Apple doesn't like it either, and they're both really in it for the money. But there are two sides to that also: allow a little "open source" (ala MS-DOS and Linux) and the primary benefits, allow too much "cloning" and the primary dissappears (ala IBM PC).
That being said, within the skinning community, I can see both sides... nextmario says he given credit and is not hiding whose work it really is, just that he's improved it... and Butch123 has seen enough rips that try to slip by as mods and eventually (like squatters) stake their own flag. But as someone suggested, it really comes down to communicating with the one just before whom you're borrowing from... one simple attempt, either you get approval or denial, or no answer. The first is great, and you proceed, the second you sulk and try to overhaul and outdo. The third you proceed (or not) and when someone accuses you, you have something to show that you tried... If this really is a community of "arteestes" then like Solomon's dilemna, the true "mother" will speak up and let their child flourish....
This may be my first post at DA, after receiving a great amount of graphic goodness from a great many kind souls here...

Nextmario, don't stress Butch. Yes, you should have gotten permission first...thats really besides the point. I can see butch digging through forums waiting for the first sign of someone possibly attempting to take credit for someone else's work and the minute he finds it, he jumps all over it. Butch your like the kid in highschool, that would yell out at the end of class "Excuse me, but you forgot to assign homework?"
Butch please relax yourself. Its a visual style.
1. He's not taking any credit for the work.
2. It's not your design, he re-worked, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.
He emailed the author and if the author wants it down, he said he'll take it down.
I think your a little to busy sitting in your room making these things you forgot what art is buddy. If there was money to be made off these things, then I could understand why this would be considered wrong. But there is no money involved, and hes giving the original author full credit. If I made a design, and some other designer had something he thought might improve the piece...more power to him, hes not erasing my design, just making a new version of it. Hes not making money off my work.
Please stop being such a tool, go do your own thing and stop worrying about everyone else, you were not put here to babysit people you dont know, so please dont.

It's as simple as this nextmario...If you get permission first everything is fine. If you have no permission, no matter how much you thank the creator, link to his page, say what you did to the skin, a mod without permission is a rip. It's fine for personal use but should never be posted without permission. It's also a good idea to put a permission.txt in the file...a copy and paste of an email is usually fine. It's easy to do, and then there is no problem.

I agree with Butch123, he's been around a lot longer than you, knows his stuff, and this should be bounced!! Butch123 has probably forgotten more than you will ever know about WB's and skinning!

I apologize to everyone here. I have should have asked permission first from the author but since I gave full credit to the author and did not remove any copyrights, I felt it was OK. In hindsight, it was wrong.
Nobody makes money of these styles, well except for Stardock whom I paid for WindowBlinds. The satisfaction a skinner gets is from the recognition he receives for a job well done. I think my comment about this MOD does that sufficiently. When I was modding this theme I quickly realized the theme needed some extensive rework to look the way I want and that it would become more than a MOD. I will create an OPEN SOURCE version that may be freely modified by ANYONE. Enough of these egos.
This Butch guy has touched a nerve. There are so many internet police these days. And to make it worse, the actions he accuses me of doing, he does blatantly by ripping the MS Vista theme so far as to put in non-functional search boxes in the start panel and address bar. Again, I did not try to take any credit for my enhancements and went as far to go into detail what I did. Honesty is not too common I guess and people like Butch will jump on you the first chance they get. I've sent the author a note and if he so wishes for me to delete this mod, I will in a heart beat. Until then Butch practice what you preach and stop "ripping" MS. I've defended Vista themers numerous times in these forums and it's sad one person like you could change my outlook---you take credit for, then try to enforce rips against Vista which completely baffles me.

You know Mario I think you are getting me wrong. I am not trying to jump all over you. But you see for the last little while everybody and their mother has been taking other peoples work, adding a button to it if you wish, calling it a mod and uploading it, which is wrong. Now Isee that you said that you are on wincustomized. Well, if you dont believe what I have told you, ask Paul Martin aka Jafo, if what I said is wrong. A mod is not legal piece of art and therefore without authoization from the author, a rip. I am sure that you had no intention of ripping anything but you know if you let one pass then another one passes, and another one passes and there is no end to it. Now, as far as my vistas skins go you can also check this with Jafo. anytime that Microsoft releases an operating system as they are releasing Vista, it is 100% legal for a skinner to make a windowblind or VS of it. As long as he doesnt use someone else's work. I am not talking about Microsoft, I am talking about other skinners.Again, this is not a personal attack on you, as this skin you moded did not even belong to me, but try to consider the work that the other person put into it, maybe weeks or months of work and I am sure you will understand what I mean. Anyways as I said, Paul will be more than happy to answer of your questions thaty ou dont believe that I have told you...
