Description
This is a response to the requests that I received to create a digital painting tutorial. Before you read this tutorial please understand that this is the way I paint and not the "proper" way to digital paint. Hope this gives you an indication of how I work and assists you in some wayPersonally I think that the best way to paint is to paint the way you're comfortable with. If you don't enjoy painting because you're uncomfortable with the technique you're using, you're using the wrong technique.
Trial and error is a great way to find out something that works for you. Trial and error was how I came across this technique and it worked for me then and still works for me now.
Things I didn't include:
Brush sizes: Dependent on the size of your canvas. For the canvas size I used, I used the following brushes: 6px, 9px, 19px, 32px, 64px, 128px. Small brushes for detail, large brushes for base colours.
Additional blending setting: In addition to an opacity/flow setting of 45%/50% and 25%/30% in some areas I used a 15%/20% setting. This allowed for a more flowing blend.
References: Some consider using references as "cheating." References are the equivalent of a model coming into a life drawing class to be drawn. In that instance, she's the reference. If you're new to art then using a reference is something that I would recommend.
Textured Brushes: People have commented and asked me if I use textured brushes. I do occasionally but I use them after I paint using the method explained in my tutorial. Textured brushes are great for giving clothes that material feel to it and give skin pores

Can someone just tell me why Photoshop CS5 doesn't seem to have these sharp edged/soft brush tips anymore? I need to blend in painting SOMEHOW...DX
Can someone PLEASE just tell me where to find brush tips like these? Set them to this kind? SOMEONE?! ANYONE?! DX

Very nice job on this! You went very in depth and it's well appreciated. You're amazing at blending with that method!

I hope it helps, I tried to go as in depth as possible without waffling on and boring the readers
Thanks, I wouldn't say I'm amazing at this method though ehaha
Is this similar to the way you shade?

Hey! Thanks for the tutorial!
Is there any possibility to change the brush spacing to 1% for every (default-)preset?

NicLiew In reply to punani [2008-12-30 03:37:18 +0000 UTC]
Hrm, that's a good question. The only foreseeable way I see of doing it would be to replace the default brushes with the same brushes set to a spacing of 1% (you can save brushes).
I just set it to 1% every time I select a default brush though But yeah it is a bit of a waste of time every time I reselect a brush ehaha

Mhmmm yeah... that's - just a bit - annoying.

NicLiew In reply to punani [2008-12-30 13:32:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I tend not to use that many brushes though. Just the one in the tutorial (at different sizes) and a couple of texture brushes. It tends not to be a huge problem because when I start painting I can tell if I've forgotten to change the spacing because it creates a very rough painting feel =/

Yeah but it gets really slow with 1% spacing if you set a big brush size. And my PC isn't slow. oO

Hrm, what sized brush are you using? I generally use 128px, 64px, 32px, 19px, 9px and 6px in my 4000x4000px canvas and I don't get any lag what so ever =/

128px with 1% spacing on a 4000x4000 canavas takes 1 second on my PC with Photoshop CS4 64bit to make a diagonal line over the whole sheet.

Ah yes, I don't use 64bit. I use either 8 or 16 bit.

64-bit version of Photoshop, like 64-bit Vista. I use an 8-bit image to draw.

Ooh, I see what you mean, apologies on the confusion. So I assume you have 4 gigs of ram or more?
Okay, so I just checked a 128 pixel brush. It lags if you take a long stroke. Probably something I didn't mention was I tend to take a number of short strokes as opposed to long strokes.

I got 4 GB RAM... probably I should get more... I don't know? I let Photoshop use 3 GB.

NicLiew In reply to punani [2009-01-01 20:58:19 +0000 UTC]
Nah that should be enough. With a high resolution and giant canvas you can expect a little lag

thank you for the tutorial! I really appreciate you taking the time to do so. I'll definitely use this to lead me as I practice my digital painting.

I hope it helps you out. It was an interesting learning experience to write it too because I guess you never really notice how nit picky you become when you're using your own method.
It's just business as usual when you paint, you never really think about the settings you use, the brush you use or even picking colours
If you have any questions please feel free to send me a message and I'll be more than happy to help out! I can't wait to see what you can produce digitally

Thank you! I'll definitely be sending you a message if I have any questions. Actually, do you know if using photoshop elements will be a big disadvantage? That's what I have, and I've noticed that the brush seems to be slightly different.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
NicLiew In reply to SilverShadow591 [2008-12-29 11:23:15 +0000 UTC]
Hrm, no, it shouldn't be a huge disadvantage, from what I've read the differences aren't with brushes so that's odd that the default brushes are different. I still believe that it shouldn't make a huge difference. If you're worried send me a screen shot of what brush you'll be using and I'll see how different it is

No worries, glad I could help.
I was a little skeptical and thought it wouldn't be of help to anyone and when I checked how many views and favourites it had this morning I thought it went un-noticed and people didn't think it was of any help to anyone

GlassArrowz In reply to NicLiew [2008-12-28 02:24:11 +0000 UTC]
I always learn something new from everyone, so all tutorials help. I also like how you start with a dark background, most I've seen start with white.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
NicLiew In reply to GlassArrowz [2008-12-28 02:54:33 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I actually wrote a couple of paragraphs specifying the importance of avoiding use of extremes of one colour (fluros, white, black, etc) at work but I ended up getting rid of those paragraphs because the tutorial ended up being too long.
It just detracts the viewer's eyes from the subject itself which is never good

GlassArrowz In reply to NicLiew [2008-12-28 03:37:12 +0000 UTC]
It's also easier than looking at a white page when I start..it's hard to find a good way to start with just white
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
NicLiew In reply to GlassArrowz [2008-12-28 03:39:21 +0000 UTC]
I guess that's because it sets the scene for the drawing *shrug*
I don't find it too difficult to start with just white, I just prefer a colour to work on

It should work in other similar applications. You need a similar brush though, I haven't tried painting in free programs like Gimp though

Yeah, it's a bit like Photoshop, I've used it at work once or twice, it handles a little differently so I'm not the biggest fan of it but I believe it can still get the job done

It sounds like it but it feels different and looks different when you use it. It's a great piece of software mind you and especially since it's free (Gimp)

Yeah, Gimp's quite small.
Oh creature house expression is also a good free program. You can download it here [link] (scroll down to where it says Download Creature House Expression from Microsoft and click on the link below that). You need a MSN passport though.
Do you have a tablet? Might be a bit difficult without a tablet tho
