Description
I use this imagery so much it's ridiculous.A teacher said I should change it because it looked like I was ripping off Van Gogh, but I don't really see the resemblance.
Gesso, ink and watercolor on board.

I can't think of a Van Gogh painting that's so monochrome...or one with power lines.

I used to follow the power lines on drives as a kid. I loved the way they changed position as each one met another pole. I like this, it's so dark and industrial looking. Great piece.

I don't see you ripping off Van Gogh. Looks great, wish I had more to say.

It makes me think of Monet more than Van Gogh. I could picture the same subject in the different seasons and different times of day. This one says 'autumn and dawn' to me.

I'm so tired - therefore this is one of those I'll get back to you when I can think comments. I was just going to leave a comment on your user page asking how you were when I saw this. I like it I sometimes find myself wishing the impossible; that instead of using something as a basis for comparison, people could just try and critique art for what they saw it was, not what they thought it resembled.

Yeah...well sometimes comparisons can be nice or helpful, and people can't help but think of every similar piece they've seen before, along with the artists too... It's always interesting when someone's painting comes out looking so similar to someone elses style when they didn't even intend for it to be that way, it just shows how much images subconsciously stick in our minds whether we mean for them to or not.

yeah, i don't think you should necessarily take what she says seriously if she meant that intentionally. i think that this style is awesome, and frankly, i don't think it even really takes on very much of a van gogh appeal, because it's got a completely different subject matter than van gogh's stuff does. it's funny, because i don't want to knock your teacher whom i haven't even met, but i think i agree (at least partially) with what ~kirsty-lee says. i think there's a little too much comparison that goes on in art critique, instead of exploring the contrasts between pieces to allow for greater expansion of the imagination into uncharted territories of artistic expression. really, nice work with this; and i would encourage you to try to take this style in another direction that would completely throw your teacher off from even being able to compare it with something from the past at all.

thanks...yeah, I think I would like to keep working in this style, Van Gogh wasn't even on my mind when I was doing it, I was just having fun using the gesso as paint...
Comparison isn't always so bad but I agree with you about the need to explore contrasting areas more if art is going to be compared at all..

hmm i can see what she means.. but i don't think it isn't indivdual.. i think she's just trying to make everyone aware of how smart she is by comparing everyone's art to famous artists and whatnot. very nice painting otherwise
