Description Not actually an apprentice, just a young man (a beginner waiter at the cafe) really fascinated with the fact that the old man was really an artist and he actually was sitting there drawing people.

What I really love about this shot is the interaction here, we see this mixture of shyness and awe of the young man and the old man is giving an impression of a very experienced and wise person. I love the contrast that really adds a lot to the concept of the Master and an impressed youth - the light focus is on the artist - an all-white person, looks like a wizard of some sort.

Well, I like this shot, I like almost everything about it, including the grainy look of it. What I don't like is that we can't really see the young man's expression, only the somewhat submissive pose of his. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but, well, this is the best shot of those I took at that cafe.

I feel like getting really addicted to people watching/photographing.

This is a great photo! I very much like the lighting on the old man's face.

I am doing a pencil drawing to practice different lighting and I would like to use this man's face as the focal point. It's nothing commercial or anything, just for fun. Could I post this once I'm done (while giving due credit)?

I love this, it almost seems as if the artists is bemused by the waiter, seeing as he is so young and has so much more to experience. I know a lot of people have comment at all the contrasts in the photo, but what strikes my the most i the hair pulled back/hair in face. The artist has had many years to come into his own and is confident, while the waiter is still wary. Beautiful.

this is a fantastic shot!! the contrast of the lighting is only overshadowed by the concept presented by the two characters. I love this piece! I was actually browsing DA looking for a piece that somehow showed foolishness and wisdom in the same piece, and I think this is it. Fantastic piece once again.

Very powerful picture, this is what i see when i look at it: Shy n' Blod, dark n' faded, empty n' full, wanting n' giving, unsure n' confident, playful n' serious, before n' after, plain n' detailed. i could go on and on. Truly an awesome picture.

Wow, it's quite a powerfull photo. I really like the contrast between the whiteness of the older gentleman and the darkness of the young man. The old fella looks like the friendly teacher sort.

Beautifull photo. I think your description sums up a lot of my ideas on what I see there, too.

I love the contrasts here too - darkness and light, old age and youth, looking up and looking down. Even the hair seems to fit in perfectly, that of the artist combed back while that of the waiter is hanging downwards. Very well seen and captured, makes me want to go out shooting people again (with the camera only, of course )

Sorry, I didn't see the name of the picture at first, but I had the same association with it as you did. This young man is very.. I don't know how to say, he is burning with energy and he is trying to do everything perfect, and I actually like it in spite of all the drawbacks.

It really came out reminding me of a still shot from a movie or something. the dramatic lighting is great, of course i have a person bias toward dramatic lighting so..... I have no critique. it a great portrait give the viewer a very good depth of emotion and intrigue to study. I can see how people watching could be so enjoyable for you with expressive people like these to watch

Most of the time I'm surrounded by rows of blank faces of the heat-suffering monkeys sipping their coffee, but expressive people do exist. Though even with an expressive person you need a special moment, as I mentioned before, the old man looked like quite a grumpy type before the waiter asked him something..

the old man has a very fascinating charisma. So "knowing". He looks simple but at the same time he gives the impression of someone who knows what he is talking about and has a critic eye, but not from above. The youngster really seems to listen to him - not in fun but like he is _really_ listening, maybe to get some knowledge too. He listens to the teachers lesson, trying to improve himself. REally a wonderful shot. I like it very much, especially the white-black contrast. The white hair gives the old man much more the feeling of an old wise man, while the dark haired youth seems to be a cub besides him.

I actually was surprised at how kind and wise he turned out to look when he had this short conversation with the youth. When he was drawing we looked like quite a grumpy old man

Sometimes I sit at Starbucks and draw the people there. I'm not so good at it like that old man I guess. The interesting thing is that while I'm drawing I start to imitate the facial expressions of the people - to get a better feeling for it and to know, which muscles are used. Maybe that artist did this too. Sometimes my friends say I look dark and bitter but I don't feel so but draw people with that expression.

Yes, that's the first association that I had when I first saw him - Gandalf. I'm not a fan of Tolkien's books, but Gandalf seems to the persona, the character that got beyond the books or movies, he's like a symbol.
We both are regulars at that cafe, I always sit in the corner - to see all the room, he always sits at one of the tables in the middle - to get closer to people.
Contrasts are in each and every detail here. Thank you very much.
