Description
As promised, here's the tut on creating tube and ribbon-like flames from tiles in the style of Sigillum. I made into a ZIPped .PDF to save downloading time. There's a couple disclaimers inside you may want to read before you begin - you'll need a square tile fractal to start with, which can be created according to the instruction provided here [link]I've tested and proof-read the tut a few times and it should work fine, but please feel free to notify me every bug you may find.
Hope you'll have fun with this, and don't forget to show me what you tweak out of it, mkay?
Last minute edit: initially, I'd been in doubt for a while wether or not I should provide a starter flame with the tut, since the credit for the tiling technique's not mine after all.
However, well after finishing the tut, I've just received a most welcome permission note from `Platinus . I can't edit the .PDF at the moment - however, included in the .ZIP you'll find a text file with the starter flame parametres - if you can't/don't want to get to the link above, just copy-paste the text into Apophysis for a quick start.
Last minute edit take two: just notified me that a transform was missing from the starter text I'd uploaded. This is entirely my fault, I've messed up between different copypastes. If you've chosen to go through the LTS it'll be no prob. However, I've fixed that now. My apologies.

I got the saving thing but when I started your tut....I have no idea where to find the "foci".

Go look up for it in the Transform editor (Triangles button on the Apo main window), under the Variations tab...
can't remember now if I'd pointed this out clearly in the tut, but as far as I know the Foci variation does NOT come with the standard Apo installation pack... so if you still can't find it, you'll have to look up on the Apo webpage for Variations packs/bundles or something like that, download and install it before you can proceed with the tut.
Hope that helped, let me know

Its not with my 3Dhack so I will go dig it up if possible. Very eager to try your tut.

I did the live tutorial and got a lovely bit done but i have no idea how to use the parameters he gave. Just WHERE do you cut/paste those for quick access next time? I saved parameters on the actual one I did but now I cant call it up again. Im eager to try yours but this foundation bit is a real pain.

You just have to copy the actual parametre text, start Apophysis and punch in CTRL+V... it'll load up right away.
No worries, first time I tried using someone else's params I was just as puzzled as you, didn't really figure out it could possibly be SO straightforward ('specially cause Apo, rather than a learning curve, is more like a 90 degrees learning angle )

Thanks for sharing! I am new to apo and fractals. Resources such as this are greatly appreciated.
There is one thing I can't seem to find. Near the end when editing the final xform you say to set Linear=0 and Foci=1. Where do I find "Foci"? I've spent 30 minutes trying to find. I am sure it is staring me in the face and I just don't see it, but...
Thanks again!!

No probs, looks like you haven't installed all the plugins
download the ZIP pack from here [link] create a folder named Plugins within the main Apo folder and unzip them therein, then restart Apo. Now Foci (as well as many others) should be up and running in Transform Editor -> Variations Tab, towards the bottom of the list. Hope this helped, if that doesn't work or if I've made a wrong guess (i.e. you had installed the plugins) feel free to ask me again

Yeah, I had gone back and read the beginning of your tutorial again and realized I hadn't installed the plugins.

Well, I have photoshop running, and I mess with apo, and something previewed at 50 or less quality, and it takes like.... 5 minutes to generate the preview, whereas with PS closed, it normally takes less than a min... 1.25 GB of RAM ftl.

Ah ok, I definitely see the point now me, I work on a prehistoric laptop with 256 mb RAM so I have to forget about multitasking entirely - once Apo's up, nothing else can be

NilNilNil In reply to Verithia [2008-02-26 08:31:01 +0000 UTC]
Not really... when using Apo that is my only focus so I don't really need anything else running. The tough part is trying to render at high oversample values

Verithia In reply to NilNilNil [2008-02-26 17:25:01 +0000 UTC]
Hehe. I can't wait to experiment with Apo again... I have some fractals that I need to render but with PS open... I swear, it'd take like, 2 days....
