So I click on my notifs, I see a creepy grayish hand against a shadowy, broad-strokes background. I think, "Oh, yeah, that's nilwilnil, they're a goodΒ artist."Β
Then, right there on myΒ computer screen,Β in my supposedly safe room, it starts twitching.Β
Thanks for the jumpscare of the day, lol. Great piece.

You're very welcome Neil! I used to post photos of my metalwork, when I first joined DA. Most of those postings are in storage.

I was a blacksmith for about 10 years, what did you do?

Metal-Bender In reply to nilwilnil [2019-04-06 22:05:16 +0000 UTC]
Awesome! Mostly jewelry - silver, copper, brass, and bronze. In addition to torch work, I did enamel work, casting, and repousee. I did make a copper bowl and stand for a class. The teacher lent me her tools and a hollowed out tree trunk for forming - very noisy process but the hammering of the form was a pretty zen experience.

I'm so glad you have a good answer. I applied to a metalwork school once.Β
I was surrounded by women asking "why".Β Turns out it was a jewelry school, which would have been fine with me.Β
But they were curious, hehe.Β
I'd like to make jewelry.Β
But I was a burly blacksmith, lol.Β
Do you want an ax, a sword, or some ornamental railings?

Metal-Bender In reply to nilwilnil [2019-04-06 23:49:58 +0000 UTC]
Hmm...interesting. There are many men who are fine jewelers - not sure where those ladies were coming from! My metalwork teacher wasn't that interested in jewelry and much preferred heavy metal! She eventually taught only blacksmith classes. I was considering getting a welder and doing some ornamental metalwork but the cost of it all was a bit out of my price range and my interests changed over time. I don't see why you couldn't make jewelry. You have a good understanding of metal and heat properties. The biggest difference would be dealing with much smaller tools - jeweler's saw, smaller hammers, torches, tiny anvils, and so on. I think a sword would be awesome!

Lovely work Neil! Thanks!Β I would be honored to take your photo!
I took a couple of my pieces out of storage:
This is the copper bowl and stand that I told you about.
Here is one of my jewelry pieces. It's a sandcast sterling silver pendant set with an amber cabochon (fine silver bezel), sterling silver wire hangers and handmade sterling silver fetter and three link chain.

I waited for the animation before commenting, it sort of makes me feel uncomfortable, like when in ads they make babies appear to sing.
I don't know why, as I like the still version. Maybe I am just weird?

I wanted it to be creepier, maybe it just needs a soundtrack of singing babies ;]
