It's very, very natural for kids to gravitate towards the opposite parent. Not sure why, but it seems to be the case.

I have always wondered their ages, as in the whole MLP universe, cannon and fandom, (accept for the REALLY old or REALLY young ponies) it's hard to know how old anypony is. After the Equestria girls movie you'd think that they were all in high school, but in Ponyville they all appear to be and are indicated to be older (20 somethings) like Rarity owning and running a business and living on her own in Carousel Boutique. We may never know for the actual series but at least we know for yours great brony! Love these little side sketches you've been doing to answer questions! I hope you are well!
