Description Featuring Roscoe and Maddy

"... And then the prince swept in and saved the Fawn Swan Princess from the evil Blackwood sorcerer!" Maddy read aloud breathlessly. Roscoe flicked an ear towards the little girl to prove he was listening, but kept on munching at the savory summer grass of the secluded forest glade. The summer air was warm and pleasant, and the forest was alive with birdsong and insects. The trees all around them grew tall and thick, so it was easy to imagine that they were in a secret magical forest. In reality, they were just half a mile off the main riding trail in the area.

"Oh Roscoe!" Maddy said dreamily, rolling onto her back and hugging her book tight against her chest. "I could see you as a fawnling prince! You're so strong and pretty. And brave, too!" Roscoe snorted as if in agreement and began grazing his way back towards his owner. When he loomed over her, he thrust his grass-stained muzzle in her face and snuffled her cheeks. Maddy laughed and shoved his snout away from her, "Oh, you big goof. You'd need better maners than that if you want to be a prince." she kissed his whiskers and rolled back over onto her stomach to continue reading.

"The Fawn Swan Princess turned to the handsome prince and thanked him for saving her. She glowed with magical power, and together they journeyed home, where they would be wed and live happily ever after."

Maddy smiled and closed the book. "Speaking of home, it's almost supper time! We should get a move on, Mr. Roscoe. You might be able to stuff yourself with grass, but I'm starved." she stood and tucked the thin paperback novel into the back pocket of her cutoff jeans. She placed her little hands on Roscoe's withers and began to scrambled her way onto his back. She wasn't quite tall enough to make it in one smooth leap, but the stag was patient with the little girl and allowed her to climb and kick and push until she was settled comfortably astride him. She dug her fingers into his long mane and squished her heels against his ribs. They often went bareback and without a bridle; Roscoe needed little direction where Maddy was involved. He'd do anything to please her.

"Away, my prince!" she cooed, and the pair journeyed towards home.
