Well, first thing to try and figure out is gender. That's harder than it sounded at first XP

I feel you. It may seem easy, but I always have trouble when it comes to gender, as I always try to keep the number of my male and female characters in balance.

Yeah, I've noticed that male main protagonists are considered universal, while female protagonists are considered for female audiences. I kind of wanted one of each. Now for names... I've already got one XP

That's true actually. I think it may be because the audience gets to 'hear' the main character's thoughts more often, and because girls tend to make many...girl-ish thoughts, they're considered for female audiences only. Although I'm not entirely sure why that doesn't apply to the male characters as well.. And wow, you have? XD The names usually come to me last, once I've finished developing pretty much everything else XP

Here's the thing, I pretty much have developed everything else. I know the relationships I want them to have, and the basis of their personalities, which will get a chance to develop as the story goes along.
Yeah, I think it's because girl protagonists are often synonymous with romance, which tends to appeal to girls more than boys. I can tell you for sure that's not going to be the case here. In fact, I made the two leads cousins so they wouldn't get shipped romantically. (Then again, this is the internet, a place where Pinecest and Mariocest are a thing XP)

Yeah, that's pretty much how it starts. It's weird how some of the most important stuff such as the name, looks, age, etc, come last XD
That does make sense. It's often why I put two characters of the opposite gender as protagonists; and I don't really care if they get shipped. After all, even I ship my characters most of the time sometimes! XD (Oh, I've seen Pinecest. The fans tend to get a little too... enthusiastic sometimes XP)

Oh, I don't mind a bit of shipping, I just don't want the two of them to be shipped together. It's too cliche and doesn't seem like it could work well in the context of the cartoon- er, story. Yeah, I'm that rebel who wants to defy the "two main opposite-sex protagonists fall in love" thing, so I either give them other love interests, or make them related. Spoilers: Sharon and Jay are main characters of the opposite gender, and they don't hook up, though people will expect them to. (Oh, Dipper Goes to Taco Bell proved that much. By the way, this is kind of out of nowhere, but do you know an artist called Markmak? They're really talented and make some amazing comics

Making them related is probably the easiest way out Although another great way to avoid main-two shipping is by making a lot of protagonists- that way people will have different opinions on who has to be shipped with who... Wait, am I getting off topic? XD Also, people will expect them to? Tell me more... (I didn't know about him until you told me I just checked out his account, and found out that his work really is awesome! )

That would probably work, too. In fact, I've done that a couple times- Avatars of Medallion Moon, for instance. Well, kinda.
