Description
Many times have people asked how I do my traditional colored pencil works. And now I have finally finished my second tutorial. This one tells not only using of normal colored pencils but also the watercolor pencils, because if I make a drawing with colored pencils I allways use also the watercolor pencils. I almost never use water with the watercolor pencils, I just love the stronger and more covering feeling of them. This tutorial tells actually only about skin coloring, but the tecnique is same when I color something else.
If you are interested about my traditional art tecniques, you should also see my watercolor tutorial.

Wow, this is so cool! I wish I had a set of coloring pencils that good! All I have are old Crayola and Roseart coloring pencils...and they don't seem to scan very well.

Thank you! I know the scanning is hard. I allways have to correct the colors and contrast in photoshop after scanning a colored pencil drawing. Sometimes it's impossible to get the colors look right.

I can't use Photoshop on this computer...mostly because I don't have enough RAM and it causes it to crash. I have Gimp, but I don't really know how to use it...

There's a program called Paint.NET, try that one. It's good for editing pictures and it doesn't take up much space on the computer unlike Photoshop.

I think it's important that the quality is high in the colored pencils, you can tell the difference between cheap and expensive tools. But I have seen people making beautiful pictures with cheaper tools too, it's different, but it's possible. You could also buy a smaller set of quality colored pencils and then add extra colors of your choise by buying separately sold colored pencils. I hope this helped

i use Derwent all the time, and i have a question: is it me or do the colors blend better when you start coloring from darker to lighter?
π: 0 β©: 1
nokecha In reply to Lumysaara [2009-09-16 08:46:30 +0000 UTC]
I think it doesn't matter, but I usually start from lighter colors. The point is to color slightly, without pressing hard first. Blend the colors you want and when you don't want to add any more colors, color with a lighter color over everything and press hard. (I hope you understand my explanation )

i did, i just missed the part with not pressing too hard for the first layer of color. it all makes sense now

Very helpful indeed! I have the most trouble with the skin, so this is perfect for me! One question, where do you buy your pencils at? I've been wanting some really good Derwent pencils for a while, but I can't find them anywhere!

Thank you! I have bought mine about ten years ago from a local art shop. I think you could try to find a web shop that sells derwent.

Thank you very much There is so much work to do when making a traditional art tutorial, that's also one reason I didn't make it longer. Is there any particular areas in the picture you'd like to see how they are done? I can't continue this tutorial, because the picture is finished and I didn't take photos of the rest of the coloring work. But I might do for example "how to color hair with colored pencils-tutorial" etc. in the future (maybe
).

How you did the folds in the clothes and coloring her hair. Those are the things that I epically fail at.

I could maybe some day do a hair cooring tutorial, but I feel like failing in the folds of the clothes & fabrics too XD
