I really like Si Scott's style and decided to try it again, this time without using a direct reference. Although I did use a ref for the cat [link] I was also thinking about submitting this as a t-shirt design. Lemme know what you think.fine point pen on bristol

Photoshopping the colour in after is a great way to see what would work, also means that if it doesnt work you havent ballsed things up

Well, I got the pens in a five pack at walmart for about $3, and I'm not quite sure how much the britsol pads are running for now, but I wouldn't expect more than $10.
