Description Journal Entry #54

I got my journal back. Sort of… Nuri figured I’d need it, seeing as to where we’re headed next. But before I get to that, let me fill you in on our first full day in Asteria.

With us Cinders unloading cargo and Jay with the rest of the Roaring Iceberg’s showing up not too long after, Asteria wasn’t expecting such a large group of guests to arrive on their shores. We met up with Ebony and Ezra, co-leaders to the city’s Pale Rose guild, who told us of their predicament. Along with helping the chefs prep a meal for tonight, they also had a problem with some juvenile delinquents who’ve been getting too bold and Riptide was practically covered with young city kids wanting to learn how to swim.

There was a lot to do.

Catching criminals isn’t really my thing… especially considering the last time we were tasked with that didn’t go too well, even if these were just kids… so Russy and I stuck to the docks and swam around in the water a bit. I was big enough and able enough to help some of them onto my back to get them comfortable being in the water, but I think Russy may have scared them.

She got this one kid on her head and then rapidly kicked her legs so that she shot like a torpedo in the water! The kid screamed until, not being able to see where she was going, Russy ran right into a floating piece of driftwood and the kid catapulted onto the sand. Most of the kids stayed away from her after that, but a young bellsprout named Plum thought it was the coolest thing and asked constantly for Russy to give him rides.

Don’t worry! I tried my best to make sure they didn’t rocket too far out into the river and hit a bad current or hit their heads on another obstacle.

It was late afternoon when we finished up. We headed into the city in the direction of the main kitchens, but boy was that place chaotic, it still makes my head spin. A maze of pathways were on ground level with a tangle of bridges, walkways, and houses in the dense trees above that cast the city in a constant gloom. You’d think that would be pretty scary or depressing, but the lights. Lights were everywhere! Hanging lanterns, street lamps. It’s a wonder how they keep them all lit and free from breaking and setting the whole city on fire. Unless they use some other source to light their lamps? I have seen some glowy mushrooms.

Anyway, Russy and I whipped up a few dishes in the kitchens. I’m decent at cooking, but most of the time my dishes are missing one key ingredient. Whenever I cooked back at home or on the road, Russy would throw something into the pot and it would oddly taste better. Most of the time. There was that one time that she added some funky looking tree bark to this stew and the whole thing tasted like dirt… She liked it at least. I didn’t.

But I think these dishes all turned out okay! Russy even offered some of her mushroom flaps. I saw one of the chefs eyeing my tail, looking a bit disappointed I didn’t have it. Sorry bud. Not my choice. Slowpoke tails do shed naturally, but mine was chomped off, so it’ll take a bit longer for a new one to form. I’m about halfway there I think.

The meal with all my guildmates that followed was actually quite enjoyable! Everyone seemed to be in good spirits and everything tasted great! You couldn’t even tell that there were two separate guilds here. Even Jay and Nuri seemed to be having fun and those two always seem to have a spark of rivalry between them.

Then Pandora, the head leader of the Pale Rose guild, strutted in late in the night with a crowd laughing around her, listening and dancing to the music. Some of the guild had headed off to bed, but Russy was enjoying herself too much and I didn’t want to ruin her fun by calling it quits just yet. I got wind of the three Asteria leaders’ and the four Rift City leaders’ conversation and found out where we were headed next for key number two.

A place called the Moon Pool. Apparently it’s incredibly dangerous and off limits, the source of all sorts of spooky stories… We were headed there in the morning, so I decided to turn in. Besides, even Russy was starting to get a little loopy from lack of sleep, stumbling into stuff and laughing.

All in all it was a pleasant, feel-good day. Especially after that exhausting trip down the river…
