Description
It looks there aren't especially good alternatives to deviantART, so gotta put up with the new Eclipse UI for the time being... I don't feel the gains are greater than what was lost. So, we can no longer define the category of the deviations? I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, I wonder if it made a difference.Anyway, I did some practicing with just planes. This is what I used to do a bit in my early days. It doesn't require much of understanding about perspective (unless you go for more ambitious exercises) but it can be used to get familiar with seeing the orientation in space. Not just that, but these are also good warm ups and quick to do.
This is how it works:
1. Draw a random polyline. Almost anything goes really.
2. Copy the polyline and displace it a bit (or draw as similar polyline as you can next to the original). It's only a good thing if the two polylines overlap each other a bit.
3. Connect the respective end points and corners to create a three dimensional thing. Erase parts that are obstructed by the planes.
4. Observe the orientation of each plane. I like to make the bottom face a bit darker to emphasize the the difference.
With these principles you can do many different variations of the same practice. You can even go for smooth surfaces. You can imagine that there are just a lot of flat planes that are so small that the surface appears rounded. You can add more overlaps to make it more interesting and challenging. You can also spin the strip multiple times if you want to make it really confusing

DUDE! This is a great tutorial. Can't wait to try it at some point in my art journey. It jogged my memory for something I want to do with my own tutorials and studies.
