I managed to get some outstanding help from *AlfaFilly and ~fluffyz with this, both through the crits and through skype to help me figure out what else this needed, and I'm seriously happy they did because it looks way better now!
So our final assignment for Intro to the Digital Graphic Design program is to draw a poster to some song lyrics. This isn't my project pff
But I'll be re-doing it in illustrator at school, I was just really excited about the assignment I decided to start planning 8D
Plus, Blockhead is one of my favorite music groups, and the video is trippy, and it was animated by the Superjail creator dude. So yeah.

This both terrified and made me insanely happy all at the same time 8D
First off, I really have to comment at how different this is from your usual stuff. You really went out on a limb to try out something I've never from you before. If I were to see this, I wouldn't guess it was from you at first. I consider this a good thing cause it shows you're branching out and experimenting, which is always a great quality.
The inspiration from the video is really apparent and I think you fit it very nicely. At the same time it has your own unique flair to it. The use of colors is clearly the biggest aspect of it, and you pulled that off perfectly. The variation of tones of the yellows and orange look very nice and the changing colors of the background have a nice flow.
Same can be said of the words where each one is uniquely designed and the colors are chosen fittingly. I really like the emphasis on "scene" in the purple (and the conveniently placed 2011 date at the bottom).
The smiling face has that crazed look about it that fits in with the inspiration and I think you did a great job on the teeth and eye. The pupil being a record was a nifty concept to throw in. Perfect addition to compare with the headphones.
I think I'd like to see a bit more green in the scheme. There are multiple shades of one color but green only has two. Maybe exchanging some of the lighter cyans with more green could make that balance and shift. Some of the words (mostly just the "Down") look like they need some tidying, but I'm positive you'll get all that straightened out in the Illustrator/vector version.
I'm a little unsure what to think of the added shapes and stuff in the areas with the words. "The Music" has very prominent extra background colors and shapes while "Scene" has a bit less and "Has Got Me Down" have very little. Maybe evening that out by adding a bit more/taking away from them with balance that out some.
I also wanna commend on the transitional flow where the bottom and top of the background starts out with the yellow/orange scheme and then works out to the other colors. I think that works well while at the same time it doesn't make the background and the character blend in - they are noticeably separate. So that's rather interesting to me.

I'm happy it looks like I'm branching out, it might be because this isn't a set character or something. Usually more of this is with digital graphics projects, but I've really been favoring the styles and stuff, so expect more in the future!
I'll start working on the green placement, too, as Fluff also mentioned XD And that goes for the pattern enhancing too. I do see what you mean by it at least, so I'll go back and fix around some of the points xD
Although, my intention for the patterns following each of the lyrics I was trying to depict the sort of 'flow' of how the lyrics are said, but scene, although emphasized, I need to amp up a bit since it's the largest there xD

The edge of the eye is right on the edge of the picture, which is generally something to avoid. Perhaps just add a little more of the face on the edge, but avoid centering the nose on the edge too, that would also look off, but perhaps not as off as the eye is right now.
Speaking of the eye, the pupil and iris are an old record eh? You should make that slightly more apparent, perhaps writing an album title on the sticker part or something. The stickerβs color is also nowhere else in the image, and since itβs duller, it makes the eye less exciting to look at, which is probably not the best thing... Maybe make it a brighter red or even shades of bright green, since you only use that color once too!
The wrinkle lines donβt make complete sense. The eyeβs wrinkles probably donβt need to change, but the laugh line/dimple (whatever you call it, on the corner of the mouth) is coming from the eye, instead of from the nose! [link] I donβt know why but that bothers me.
The lack of eyebrow is kind of freaky, but I donβt know if that would make too much of a difference.
I love the patterns on the βTHEβ and βMUSICβ rays. They make me stare at and explore that area the most, so putting more patterns in other places would help someoneβs eyes to explore and continue to examine the entire image instead of being fascinated with that one spot. Even if the patters are very subtle. The eye could use more focus, or the lips, maybe even the headphones, but definitely something on the right side to balance the picture.
I was pretty wowβd by the picture right off. All those colors are placed nicely. They are bright and exciting but not jarring or blinding! So really good job there!
(Iβm really voting for a patterned bright green label on the eye-record just btw.)

I was going for a more abstract kind of style for the face, but I suppose proportions can still apply to even the whackiest of styles xD And no eyebrow was on purpose simply because it just didn't... feel right. The larger eye and mouth just made it more creepy which is what I was going for.
And yeah, like I said in Skype, it's a record, and I'll do what you said and make it green with a label
And I'll work on the pattern placement too, I agree with you with it falling flat as you move right, maybe I'll try some highlights in the face as well to bring a little more life to it. Although I'd like the lyrics and the record-pupil being the center of attention so I'll work on both!
