lets clear it up: my message through this tutorial is NOT "dont use Photoshop" but rather "start with SAI because Photoshop is indeed a very complex program, not meant for most beginners".
I don't hate Photoshop, instead, I do recognize it's a very good program that can be used to complete SAI's functions OR be used for the whole process without any other software.
If you start by working with SAI, learning is much more easy and fluid, and after a year and half using it and completing with Photoshop, I guess SAI could disapear from the face of earth, I would intuitivelly know how to work the basics of a full drawing with Photoshop already.
It then becomes a choice to keep using SAI or not, and I chose to stay with SAI for now.
I'm offering the easiest and most functional choice i know for beginers, so they can work with all the functions the pros have without having to costumize a whole program they are not even familiar with.
Feel free to suggest any other program as well, if you know something that works as easy and effective as SAI.
Man, this file needs to be redone!

i cant remember for the life of me what brand it was. it was a decent size. but really thin. never got the pen touch sensitivity to work on it either.
i have a wacom bamboo now. the pen survived a soaking in a cup of coffee. after two years its still working. ((it amazes me some times))

Hahaha, I see ^^ it's very tempting to buy other tablets for many reasons, but it must be very rare to have them working better than any wacom...
Woow, I didn't know they'd be so resistant! I always carry around mine as if it would kill me to drop it xDD

hehe i was thinking first tablet. get something not expensive and try it out. see if i liked it. i liked it but never fell in love with it til i got my bamboo.
yea they're pretty resistant things. not that i would recommend seeing how much punishment one can take.

That's strange... Did you buy it from its website? Try uninstalling and downloading it again from the official site or any source that suits you. You can always use photoshop, but it's quite harder to get used to it...

The intuos has been upgrading a lot lately, so I think you can get an inferior model for a lower price. But I don't quite know how better than the Bamboo it can be... Unfortunatly, the Cintiq's price is 1000 euros/dollars!

*cough* 1000 euros/dollars!?
Oh my gaw. I don't know what is the exact amount of it when you convert in to peso, but I know that it really costs much...
Hmm. I guess I'll go with the Intuos..
I just hope my mom will buy me one. haha : D

Yup, the cheapest one is 1000 euros/dollars. The next one is 2000. And I didn't even check the HD cintiq, I didn't want to go cry in my bed all night xD
The intuos uses the same technology as the cintiqs though, so you'll be making an awesome investment, even if without a screen

I like this tut, very useful & informative
I do my line arts in Photoshop also using the pen tool - with my brush around 2-4 Pixels and I vary the taper length by changing the minimum point diameter and stroking with Simulate pen pressure on/off.
I still feel like Pen Tool line art is cheating somehow though even though I build upto my line art by freehanding sketches - I know its just a tool to get the job done but its like having stabilizers & french curves attached to your your hand
Still Nice Tutorial

Nuei In reply to JDB-Inks [2012-03-30 21:19:31 +0000 UTC]
@__@ lemme see if I understand, Pen Tool line? Are you talking about Vectors? You know, you make a line and then adapt to the shape of the drawing?
That's what I get from the art I've seen in your gallery...
Well, SAI has both a Raster and a Vector drawing mode (depending on the type of layer used). Both of them have a Pen tool, but with the Raster layers, the Pen is 100% free handed and it totally depends on the pen pressure.
The stabilizer it uses is only for shaky linearts to become neater
You know, people who have trouble drawing straight lines on Photoshop are perfect candidates for becoming users of programs with line stabilizers, so you'd probably like to use SAI for the lineart. Download the demo to see if you like it
As for the size of the line you use, it's perfect in my point of view, so keep at it!
And don't think vectoring is cheating. If you vector your own free hand drawings, it's fine! But do give the raster layers a try some day
Thank you for the feedback

JDB-Inks In reply to Nuei [2012-03-31 03:45:25 +0000 UTC]
Yes its basically the same as Vectors but on Raster Layers. If that makes any sense xD
Where SAI has a Vector & Raster Drawing Mode, Photoshop only has Raster Mode--For Vector mode you'd need Illustrator.
However using the Pen tool in Photoshop allows you to simulate vectoring.
Thats how I do my line arts.
I will try SAI though just to see how good/bad it is.

I had no idea Photoshop could do such a thing xD That's very cool!
But you can also draw free hand on a Vector layer on SAI, and then adjust the line... I guess it's more or less the same ^^

JDB-Inks In reply to Nuei [2012-03-31 16:37:00 +0000 UTC]
Yea except in Illustrator you cant freehand the line then adjust it, but in Photoshop you can.

Something else to keep in mind (perhaps for your next tutorial) is that file types are quite important when creating and working on digital artwork. JPEG files will lose detail and you'll begin to see 'noise' in the image if work from this format. Likewise some formats like GIF can only handle a small palette of colors which can be problematic for anything containing gradients.
Perhaps for your next tutorial you might give some advice on the pros and cons of various formats and when to use them.

Woosh, I don't know very much about them I always save to .JPG because the resolution on the size I work on SAI (A4 with 300dpi) is SO HUGE I don't see a difference from the original file and the posted picture. If you download any of my recent drawings you will get such a huge file that it's impossible to make a difference.
To tell the truth, this has been bothering me for a while, because I don't want to keep and upload such heavy files and saving my computer memory while keeping quality would be a great idea Do you have any advice for me in this issue?
I'm really bad at computer stuff

TIFF and PNG files are loss-less meaning they won't diminish in quality. They also feature compression to that they don't take up as much disk space as Bitmaps. Generally the 3 file formats that will work with anything web-based now-a-days are JPEG, GIF, and PNG. The nice thing about PNG files is that they can also have transparency.

Then, PNG is the best thing ever made since Chocolate! I've been having trouble submitting PNG files to deviantart though, since I always forget to resize the images. Turning them to JPEG helps speed up the uploading, but I guess it's better to have a smaller PNG of high quality than a JPEG of a stupidly huge size... Thank you for the precious informations and advice

worldsunknown In reply to Nuei [2012-05-04 17:27:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah PNG files are pretty cool, although generally you'll want to do your work in the native file format of your digital art tool.
Still, JPEGs are fine too but *only* for saving a copy of your actual work for purposes of uploading. Some of the maps I work on are 300+MB Photoshop files because of all the effects, patterns, and layers. But someone who just needs to look at them in an RPG game is only going to care about the final image. In that case, as long as the artist retains a high-quality original, they can save bandwidth on their website (and protect their Intellectual Property) by saving and uploading a lower resolution or lower quality version that's 'good enough'.
Example: [ [link] | [link] ]
Full Photoshop version: 396MB, 5076x3612 @ 16-bit color channels
Cropped PNG Web Version: 6.9MB, 1873x1469 @ 8-bit color channels
Cropped JPEG Web Version: As PNG but 3.9 MB
I can still edit the original in all its glory, but my players are at least able to view and load it on their iPhone or Droid.

The only digital art I've done is coloring on Photoshop (it's also the only program I can figure out how to use) but I've been wanting to try doing lineart digitally too. I'd like to try using Paint Tool Sai for lineart but I was wondering can I draw lineart in Paint Tool Sai and color it in Photoshop? Also, is Paint Tool Sai expensive like Photoshop is?
👍: 0 ⏩: 4
Nuei In reply to DemonShadowz [2012-03-30 20:35:41 +0000 UTC]
No, Paint Tool SAI is 47 euros (50 to 60 dollars) but you can always download the 30 day trial if you wanna make sure it'll be worth in your case.
What I recommend is that you scan your drawings and do the lineart over them if you are having trouble with the linearts, either using Photohop or SAI. Also, use very small brushes on both programs (size 2 to 5) on an A4 canvas.
