Description

Yes, that’s right; Rosie and NOT Emily. According to the Thomas Wiki, there’s no logical reason why Emily was made engine #12, as opposed to other numbered engines after Oliver who all had some rhyme or reason as to their numbering [Diesel 10 was the tenth diesel to have appeared, Harvey was the 27th railway engine, and Rosie was originally the 39th railway engine] Sure, Emily was intorduced before Rosie, but Emily being a much older engine than most of the steam team makes her seem older and of a different set from the others.

What prompted this change was that I’ve always felt the ‘main three’ engines have been somewhat imbalanced. You have Thomas, Percy, and then… James. A tender engine. Sure, he’s mixed traffic, but so is Edward. And while he is uniquely red, his character often clashes with the two tank engines and it still felt off, like they were just pulling from a hat to give the merchandise a initial trinity instead of just two characters. With a third tank engine sorely needed and Rosie being given virtually nothing to do, I felt she was perfect for the spot.

Rosie was the third model built and, while something of a challenge -being an American engine and not a British engine, but I think I made it work, though it was because of her small cabin doorway that I abandoned the cabin doors on her and further tank engines.

I’ve also decided her color should be straight-up red and foget that she was ever a light-violet color. Not just because her name is Rosie [and roses are red, after all] but I like the idea of her nicknames being ‘Ready Rosie’ and ‘Rosie the Ready’, adding an element of eagerness [and even over-eagerness] to her character. Of course I stuck with dark red over bright red, as the bright red just didn’t look right
