Description Print for Kupocon, made at the request of an irl friend.

I hate how smooth and clean my lineart always looks. It's literally the exact opposite of what I want in my works, and my art would look better if it were "scratchier". I'm not sure how to fix that but I'll keep beating myself up about it and maybe something good will happen eventually? D;
(I probably just need to watch streams by artists whose inking looks how I want it, and see what they do. I'm working in a lonely vaccuum over here.)

Anyway, enjoy!

I'm not sure what program you use, but if you want less clean lineart you REALLY don't wanna use Sai! I'd actually reccomend one of the Clip Studios based on my limited experience with them!

I use photoshop! I tried SAI and I totally agree with you! I hated it so much! Although you can turn stabilizers off or down in programs like that, and it helps!
I think my problem, since there are no stabilizers on, is that I'm making my lines too long, and my brain is actively TRYING to keep them smooth, since it thinks it has to. I somehow need to shatter that "natural" instinct (which seems to only apply once I go digital), otherwise I'm going to keep being miserable!

Another idea is, for whatever reason, and even after 15 years of this, I can't draw on computer screens, I never could, and I still don't (I sketch on paper and then scan). My style changes completely as soon as I start drawing digitally. I'm only inking on a computer because it's been what I've done from day 1, but the answer MIGHT be that I simply can't get the look I want on a computer, no matter how hard I try. Programs are...programs, they're not paper. That could be why I love my sketches but hate my finished works, and why they never look how I intended, and how I know I could absolutely make them look. So I might need to take everything a step in a different direction, and ink on paper. I had an EXTREMELY good inking pen at one point, with cartridges and everything, that I loved so much. Maybe I can find it, so I can order new cartridges (I'm so sure they've dried out by now!!)

I really think you'd like Clip Studio! The free trial is really limited (cant even save), buy you might like it! Be sure to try both the pen and pencil tools out! It's $50 if you can't manage to catch one of their frequent sales!

(I'm getting it next month, hoping to catch a sale. I need a program with a text tool and Photoshop is ridiculous cost wise)

I think I tried Clip Studio Paint at one point and DID like it, but between then and now I became comfortable with Photoshop. At one point, Premium Pixiv users could get CSP free, so I tried to, but I found out that ended quite a while ago. xD $50 for a program is so cheap! I paid $85 for Open Canvas (which I also like for inking, and used to use instead of Photoshop for that, but not for coloring, since it lags!), and my Photoshop was paid for by my boss (I don't think anyone can really afford Photoshop, lol). I will definitely give CSP another shot at some point and see if it helps. It's really true that sometimes it's all in the program, and each artist has to find the right program for themselves in each area of their art! And sometimes it means using multiple programs for one artwork! xD

All the best programs are totally inexpensive (for what they are) in my opinion. Photoshop (Adobe products in general) is overpriced and riding on it's high of being an industry standard. I don't like Adobe products. XD Half the reason I'm getting Clip Studio Paint next month is so I don't need to rely on Photoshop any more (I primarily use Sai and it doesn't have a text tool and I'm too confused by the process of getting Sai 2 to get it).

While it's never an excuse to not draw, I totally agree some people are meant for some tools and it takes some doing to find the right one! Sai will always be my primary (maybe Sai 2 if it becomes easier to access if it ever leaves beta)! I can confirm "sketchy" lines are easier in CSP than in even Photoshop! And hey, it saves you from a monthly subscription model if you ever want to upgrade your Photoshop (or saves you from it if you're currently using a recent one, I'm not sure what version you have XD).Β

tl;dr CSP totally sounds right for what you want in an art program and it's one of the less expensive (pay) ones out there! Plus it saves you from Photoshop. XD

It does sound like CSP will help me out a lot!

One thing I *MUST* give Photoshop, though, over all other art programs I've used, is that it doesn't lag when coloring. OpenCanvas and SAI lag enough to throw everything off when I'm trying to be all artsy, and not just on my one computer (otherwise I'd blame that!). Photoshop is SUPER OVER PRICED (and I think it's because people like my boss will buy it for their employees without a second thought, considering it a "business expense"), but it can deal with large files for printing much better than any other program I've used (which makes sense, since that's primarily what it's for!). When I was using OC for lineart, I would open the file in OC, ink it, save it, and then color it in Photoshop, because OC just couldn't handle it! And as I'm sure you know, a laggy paintbrush really messes things up!

I have yet to put CSP through my "lag test" though, and for some reason I have high hopes for it, but even if I still can't use it to color, to be able to ink the way I like with it would be a miracle enough in itself!! D;

It works for some things, I will admit that! It works well for doggies and cartoon animals, but for humans I really don't like itΒ D; It's a style thing! it's like mis-matched for the style I draw humans in, and it drives me NUTS.

I'm not saying it's bad overall, just that it isn't...right for the job. It's not expressing what I'm trying to express.
