In Canto 16 of Dante's "Inferno," three souls are encountered by Dante in the third ring of the Seventh Circle of Hell, where those guilty of violence against nature are punished. Dante meets the souls of three Florentines he knew in life, his attitude towards them is mixed between admiration for their actions in life, and the sorrow he feels for the punishment they now suffer. If it weren't for the rain of fire flakes, Dante says he would go hug them. Let us remember, sodomites, those who have sinned against nature, are punished by running under a rain of fire, and whoever is left behind must remain staked in the ground for 100 years, as Brunetto Latini comments in the previous canto. The souls that Dante finds are:

Guido Guerra: A prominent Guelph leader, Guido Guerra was renowned for his wisdom and military prowess. He played a significant role in various battles, including the Battle of Montaperti. He is remembered for his valor and strategic acumen.
Tegghiaio Aldobrandi: Another notable figure in the Guelph faction, Tegghiaio Aldobrandi was respected for his courage and sense of honor. He was involved in key political and military activities in Florence, and his advice was often sought by others due to his wisdom and experience.
Iacopo Rusticucci: A wealthy and influential Florentine, Iacopo Rusticucci was known for his generous patronage and his involvement in the city's civic matters. His placement in Hell is attributed to his sodomy, as homosexuality was considered a violation against nature during that time.
