Adobe Photoshop CS1. ~10-15 hours so far. WORK IN PROGRESS (durrr).

Awesome shading and texture! Any tips on getting a better texture in your art? When I attempt more realistic styled art, it ends up looking flat.

Haha, your guess is as good as mine, I'm kind of making this up as I go. XD My personal strategy has always been to pay the most attention to the darkest darks and the brightest brights and to bring them out. Seems to add to cleanliness in addition to just accentuating depth. As for texture...I have no clue, I suck at texture. xD I always overexaggerate things, or just make shit up altogether. Don't do what I do. Use references, kiddies! >>;;
One of these days I'm gonna figure out how to apply Photoshop textures and use custom brushes and shit. Apparently they help.

I concur with those who are saying that she looks a little stiff. Her arm where it meets the chest is off -- looks almost twisted -- and she doesn't appear to have a bicep. XD The face is off -- her eye looks a little too close to her nose, and the mouth area portrudes too much in general. The lower lip is sticking out further than the upper, when it should be the opposite. Also, her chest isn't twisted enough to have both breasts that visible, I don't think -- the other shoulder would have to be be visible, at the least.

Yeah, I tried so hard to minimize her muscle development [since the subject is in younger teens, and the model I used for the initial sketch was 13 (and I have a really bad habit of making my females way TOO muscular, honestly)] that I probably overdid it on her arm. ><; But the reason you can see more of her chest than you normally would is because I'm trying to make her appear pretty flat (this is stil a WIP, and the chest is one of the areas I'm still working on; I have a nasty habit of making her chest too big XD). I had the same thought, so tried adding in the other shoulder, but considering it's pushed so far down/back in the pose it just looked really awkward considering she's slightly angled towards the viewer because of her hip and left arm position.
I'll play a bit with the eye location (you're probably right), but the protrusion of the mouth area is mainly an ethnic thing, so for her lineage unless she had a pretty bad overbite her lower lip should stick out further than her upper lip.
Thanks for the suggestions. XD I still suck really bad at humans (this is honestly only the third time I've tried one realistically), so try to put up with me. >__<;

Well, Katara is basically a martial artist, when you think about it -- all the bending styles are based off one form or another -- so it makes sense for her to be more buff than is normal. I wouldn't worry about it too terribly much, honestly.
I'd still at least hint at some shoulder, though. It looks like it's been dislocated or something and the arm is just hanging down. What would also help, I think, is shift the breast that's further from us up more along with that arm, maybe? That, or bring the bellybutton and sternum a bit closer to us. They currently look like they head up to the middle of one breast, rather than between the two.
I'll take your word on the lip thing, then. XD But wasn't just talking about the mouth specifically -- also just that portion of the face portruding. Or maybe the eye portion of the face is too far back? Hunh.
Honestly, if this is only your third realistic drawing of a person... You're nuts for thinking you're not doing a good job, and also the world is unfair. XP

i love the hand pose, but she looks kind of tensed, the body shape doesn't look... relaxed, but its still looking good, and i can't wait to see the final product! =3

Wow. This is amazing, and it's not even done yet.
Your anatomy skills blow me away, as does your shading. The lighting looks great, I feel like I can tell where the sun is just by looking at her. Also, the sand and the gold band on her arm are perfect, they look completely real.
I'd say the shading on her neck is a little too dark, and that line (is it a tendon? I fail at anatomy) is a little too apparent, making her neck look strained- but those are just small details that can be easily overlooked.
I'm pretty sure the first symbol means love, but I don't know what the second one is.
Anyway, I can't wait to see this finished. <3

The neck's deliberately a bit dark since I'm going to have it pretty well shadowed by her hair (since I'm not exactly sure how it's gonna lie yet I haven't added the extra shadows to the face yet), but I think you're right about the muscle there; I tend to overexaggerate neck muscles and not notice. I should fix that. >_> Thanks for pointing it out. XD

Her right arm is a bit off, I think. And her butt kinda looks hovering-like, not exactly relaxed in the sand, y'know? But it looks good. I always like how you color

Dude! How can you do something like that so fast? In the pic I'm working on, it took that long just to get the basic color on (The background didn't help, but still, maybe 8 to 10 hrs for the basic color of the people) Is there some special way that you do the line art and just fill it in with the paint bucket, and work from there, or do you just fill in the spots with the paint brush? (I do the paintbrush, but the edges always turn out uneven, and I spend most of those 8 hrs trying to make them even.)

Nah, I don't do anything special. I draw a sketch layer and paint in the different components beneath it on separate layers (a layer for the skin, one for the top, one for the hair, etc) and then lock the transparency, fill in the base shading (as seen on her legs at the moment), and then clean it up and add the detail on a separate layer above the sketch layer (like on her face/torso/top right now), which is when I clean up the edges. I keep em pretty rough and messy til then (as you can see on the legs/skirt).

oh, so your pretty much just slopping it on now and cleaning up later? hmm... I try to clean it up as I go, which takes a while, but other than that, we're doing everything pretty much the same. I just must be a little slow (I only did a few pics on the computer). The lines look pretty clean already for just being slopped on like that though.
