Description haven't been updating lately, cause of too much work needing to be done at the uni, I'm still trying to catch up all loose ends... anyway, this is one of the assigments for my industrial design class. We're supposed to create a 3d shape with a purely symbolic function... a fancy, word wasting way of saying - sculpture, but I guess that's for artists and we're supposed to be designers. The theme is synergy.
So, my story is rowing. Anyone who might have trained rowing will know what I'm talking about. The water always feels so still, serene, harmonic, a kind of cosmos. And then when you row, there's always that period interchanging with one of absolute agression, violence, torches & pitchforks , chaos. And only together they create motion. So...those two elements put together creating the third result is what I was supposed to show hope you like
--------------------------------
edit : this particular model was decided NOT to be the best solution I had, and the people in charge of our education thought it'd be better for me to pursue the construction of a much simpler, zen, model bugger...

I actually prefer this one. *nods*

Really nice choice of angle for the rendering, it does cool stuff with the reflections and really brings out that sense of depth. Elegant!

thank you very much ^^ shame it'll stay CG only, but I will be building the other solution, which my mentor decided was better in that it was simpler. thank you very much ^^

apparently not as my mentor and his assistant were more inclined to a more simpler model I've made, so this one is going to the scrapper

It seems a bit of a pity... I really like this one.

yes, clean in silicone heaven...how will I get the reflection in real life and those clean lines....is beyond me

There are a few real life methods to achieve this model, however they would cost a considerable amount. and many effects can also be achieved with paint and lacquers, once again that would probably involve a lot of money

carpaint could do this, I'm thinking painting over a baked clay model...if I can find a paintshop where they wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg for a 30*30*20 sculpture ... I'd do it myself, but I don't think I can bake the paint in a regular oven ...having done that, I'd polish it insanely to get this. Alternatively, acrylic paint and hairspray will have to do -_- but I'm still hoping for a deus ex machinae

the first one was much more zen, this one tells the story better to more common people

interesting...i'd say a designer needs to be an artist partially too, but also have a good technique and understand how something would function. so sculpture can also be useful i guess
anyway, this one reminds me of papers caught in the whirl of the air, in the wind

Obeah In reply to Ilharess [2007-12-07 11:16:29 +0000 UTC]

ah, yes as one of our professors once mentioned, we have to be somewhere between artists and businessmen. But no, a sculpture can't be useful in the entirity of the word, its only function, beside the symbolism that only I and people that I told the story behind it can read -_- from it, at least I cant see it glad you like it

Ilharess In reply to Obeah [2007-12-07 12:22:09 +0000 UTC]

hmm...i love pretty items...but then i prefer drawings/paintings/photos as decorations. objects i perfer to have some function AND be pretty. that's applied art...or design if you wish

look who's back!! And with poetry and science living happily ever after in one piece too! I like sinergy, it's unlogically wicked and it WORKS! Just like your art here, btw

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Obeah In reply to rowenabrennavart [2007-12-06 20:19:09 +0000 UTC]

poetry and science just got married, we'll have to wait and see if they live happily ever after It is, really, wicked, the un-logic of it continues to perplex my kitty Thank you very much But, I think it's doubtful that one would get the same effect without my story that goes with this... so to "sell" the idea,I'll have to make a kickass presentation with vector animation I'll be sure to make it available somewhere ^^

rowenabrennavart In reply to Obeah [2007-12-06 20:28:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm sure ya will make a great presentation of it!! And yes, please make it teletransport to somewhere on the net It'll help me to think of something besides bacteria, archaea and salt, freaking SALT everywhere! xD

Obeah In reply to rowenabrennavart [2007-12-06 20:59:47 +0000 UTC]

there's salt everywhere o.O OMG ...RUUUUUUUUN !!! the presentation will surely rock helped with |\/|4D animation skills....the model itself....I just hope to make without scratches

Hell, if *I* can wonder around a lab without blowing anything up (yet ) you surelly will make a scratch-free model! And yes, salt is freaking everywhere (halophilic bacteria...there's the punch-line! )

proves nothing my projects always tend to end up with some dose of improvisation which I despize, but having screwed up after several hours of painstaking work, my perfectionism likes to wear out...

improvisation is the essence of all science! xD

toadking07 [2007-12-06 18:30:07 +0000 UTC]

thats really cool, and smooth looking! like the way it flows, and reflects, seemingly violent and angry and yet calm and still, like you said.
actually i think id like to see that in real life, might buy one to put on a desk at some fancy office building because it looks like it would go there. that or in the lunge, yeah, or that.

Obeah In reply to toadking07 [2007-12-06 20:16:57 +0000 UTC]

thank you ^^ Yeah, it would look really nice with black shellac furniture but like I said to Venus, things I make are rarely as pretty as they are when I make them in 3D But hey, I'll be sure to post a picture when I'm done, if you want to buy one, I'll make another, no problem

i asked myself for quite a time .. what does synergy mean ? ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Obeah In reply to Dawn42 [2007-12-06 12:40:23 +0000 UTC]

oops might have mentioned that synergy is two elements working together giving out an output that is greater than the sum of the individual elements, in short ,1+1=3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dawn42 In reply to Obeah [2007-12-06 12:44:03 +0000 UTC]

you're welcome ^ ^ hmm, my clean equation isn't exactly accurate, it should really be 1+1=X , X>2
