And often forgotten tip with comic characters, in order to facilitate their hugeness is to often draw them anywhere from 8 to 10 heads tall.. then make the size of the head somewhat smaller.

Well, i remember reading that tip around somewhere. ;3

LOL Yup. I have that in a "how to draw" book.

I admit, I've never really tried it... as I'm not fond of the mega-dude(tte)

Obi-quiet In reply to Akamar [2010-05-05 03:44:26 +0000 UTC]

The 8-head is actually ideal. Super Models are drawn like that, as are most of your shojo manga and clothing models will actually be more heads long sometimes.

It's the typical superhero look, and it quite catching, I typically use a 7 - 7.5 setting for most of my characters. Often I'm elongating limbs and shortening the torso. ;3 I just sort of like the effect.

Obi-quiet In reply to Akamar [2010-05-06 05:06:41 +0000 UTC]

Actually, that's fairly common. *shrug* But you probably already know that. A lot of your more modern American cartoons keep the heads larger and elongate, but shrink the bodies. Danny Phantom did that, Kim Possible, American Dragon, etc.

A very useful (and fun!) tutorial! i especially appreciated the comparison between different styles -- it's nice that you didn't really say that one style was "the best" or anything. You don't see that kind of objectivity very often!

.... also, your user name literally made me laugh out loud!

Obi-quiet In reply to forty-two-point-five [2010-05-04 05:45:37 +0000 UTC]

My best friend gave me this name when I was in high-school. Think she was trying to tell me something? (I use that joke every time... )

I'm glad you liked it! Well, I do have to admit, Kubo Tite's style is my favorite style, but there's so much to learn from other peoples styles that I can't not appreciate them!

Yeah, i feel the same way. I like to see lots of different styles, especially if they're nothing like my own!

This is very helpful! I like how you use different anime characters to help show the different styles (which I never even noticed lol).

And I fail at anatomy, so this will help me a lot! Thank you very much for making this! ^^

LOL YOu're more than welcome.

I do have other tutorials that deal with anatomy if you want to look at them.

Wow!! Wonderful.

I've heard of the (heads-length-rule)

But I never saw it on real anime characters.

I fail whenever I try it..May be because of the hair that gives the head a larger size. But now I can see it obviously on Naturo and Kakashi.

Thank you very much for your great help

RadiantHalcyon [2010-01-23 04:24:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, some people do actually have longer legs. From some observations I've made, usually Westerners have a torso almost equal in head-length to the torso, so it's not really exaggerating. I will also mention that using 8 heads instead of 7 is easier on my head with the math. :S

However, this tutorial is a good reference for breaking down proportions, and you've done well to put it all together, with a lot of good examples. Awesome job

Obi-quiet In reply to RadiantHalcyon [2010-01-23 08:06:00 +0000 UTC]

LOL You're right, using 8 heads is easier, and I usually do so myself. Thank you so much!

Oh my gosh, this is amazing. Thank you very much!
It's really cool how you did a "disection" of the different characters as well as a comparison between different styles.
Thank you again.

PS- Ed is actually 15/16 years old (probably 15 when you did this). ^^''

icecheetah In reply to ??? [2009-11-10 12:17:49 +0000 UTC]

Very interesting. I never saw anything that talked about how various proportions can affect the character. I just saw a guide to drawing characters that were 8 heads tall, which I used for a while and then abbandonned as it made people's chests to large. What works really does depend in your own style and not some standard.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Obi-quiet In reply to icecheetah [2009-11-10 18:15:51 +0000 UTC]

The standard is supposed to help, and realistically people are about seven and a half heads tall, but I also noticed how professionals like to play around with that to make their characters different, and wished I could have known that before.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I hope this helped you.

This is really helpful thanks for doing it I always worry about what proportions to use for my characters

Age and gender effect height so I always get stuck thinking about that for a while

I just have to remember these proportion points now
You know what i get stuck on most though it really is annoying
like... how the shoulders work from the neck... like i cant explain it but i know that the neck comes from the back of the head and that but when i put the body in different positions, my foreshortening is really crap i just can't do that ahhhh sorry if i have confused you!!e

Obi-quiet In reply to Kaiotk [2009-04-15 21:18:07 +0000 UTC]

Honey, even after MAKING this, I get stuck on them.

No worries. I need to do a thing on foreshortening anyways...I've been putting it off because I have issues myself.
