Description
Got my first ever graphics pad this week, so......first attempt at playing about on it trying to see how it works. Their idea of what an acrylic paint stroke looks like doesn't seem to be the same as mine...Good fun though. But a looong way to go before I get the hang of the thing.

Thank you, but actually, I'm ashamed to say, that after spending that money buying the tablet, I only actually did about four paintings on it and then it got put aside to gather dust. I keep meaning to go back to it. I wanted to use it in a way that pretty much imitated the effect I get when doing "real" acrylic painting, but I wasn't able to work out how to do that. I don't feel I have control over the paint in the way that I do in real life. (Which is purely down to me, not the tablet, it's because I'm not doing it right.) After talking to you about it, I think I'll have a go at another picture and see if I can work out where I'm going wrong.

Oh wow!!! This is gorgeous!!! I love your acrylic work but its awesome to see you use a graphics tablet and this is stunning, you've captured Colins beautiful eyes, his smiling eyes so well I literally feel like he is staring out of my computer screen! And his hair and the light on his face...this is really beautiful <3

Thank you. Yeah, this is my first ever go. So far I've got to say I'm loving the thing, it's great fun. (I was worried the pen mark would appear in a different place than I wanted it, and I would just find it too alien to what I'm used to, but it's feeling very intuitive so far.)

Thank you very much.
This was my very first try at digital art, and I couldn't work out how to use the digital paint mixer palette very well.
So I ended up choosing colours from the rotating colour triangle thing on corel painter. I thought I'd never be able to pick the exact colour that I wanted, but actually the colour range on there is really good, particularly if you use them not fully opaque and then overlay them. (The only problem being...is that you have no idea where they are when you want to use them again...maybe there's a way of sticking them somewhere as custom colours for easy location next time...I shall have to see.)

Thank you for encouraging me to get one, I think I needed someone to give me a bit of a poke or I would have been too scared to plunge in

OMG for a first time, it's BRILLIANT, I would never manage to do that with a pad !!!! Whatever the medium, when you have talent, it's there ! I just love it it, of course I will always prefer real acrylic on canvas, matter of tastes, but it wonderful like that, you captured Colin's essence so well
How much time did you spend on that one (not including the "how this stuff works" lol)?
Hugs

Aww, thank you. It's very basic, I think you could easily spend a LOT more time refining and making it better, but at the moment I'm just playing and learning how to do things, so I'm not going to put loads of time into one thing yet.
I'm not going to stop doing acrylic on canvas, I like the feel of the paints etc. And one thing that did feel odd with this picture was finishing it and then not "having" it. There wasn't anything concrete at the end to pick up...which felt kinda odd.
The tablet was there when I got home from work on Tuesday evening. And all of Tuesday evening was spent installing the driver and trying to install the free graphic programmes that came with it....then going onto the forums to find out why I was getting error messages and the programmes wouldn't install (apparently very common), fixing the error messages....etc etc...
On Wednesday evening I turned it on, read a bit of the instruction manual, watched a tutorial on how to use the art programme.
On Thursday evening I started trying to draw the picture above. (I like to practice "on" something, I get really bored if I just do random lines or something. I like to try and make something and then you find out more quickly what you want to do and what you don't know how to do.) Then yesterday evening I finished the picture off. (Well, it's not really "finished", you could do a lot more on it. But it's only a practice thing, so now I'm on to the next practice thing)

I'm definitely not, but it's nice of you to say.
I am SOOOOOO relieved that I like it. Although it's only a cheap tablet in comparison to some of the ones you can buy it was a lot of money for me to spend on myself/one thing. I was terrified I would find I couldn't get along with it. But I love it so far.
Mind you, what the picture has turned out like is NOTHING like what I had in my mind when I started, I just kinda went with the flow and used the brushes/colours that I could work out how to use on the tablet, rather than making the tablet do exactly what I wanted to.
I'll gradually patter around trying the different brushes and stuff, and seeing what they do.

Well that picture is amazing.
So, to me, you're pretty good with a lot of stuff.
I'm glad you enjoy your new tablet. And you usually don't see the difference between an expansive tablet or a cheaper one until you actually tried an expansive one. Though, if you do try it you might have a hard time coming back to a cheap one.
It's a good way to start up. A lot of people tend to rush things trying to make something big with a new tool or program. It's always best to learn the tool or program before using it for something huge. I'm sure that with time you will get the hang of this new tool and create wonderful pictures and animations with it

So far I'm LOVING the tablet. The only brief falling out we had was towards the end of painting the Merlin 7 that I've just posted. The computer suddenly said it didn't have enough memory and shut the painting programme off.
When I reloaded it my painting had big red blank squares all over it. There was a certain amount of gnashing of teeth, and then I loaded up the last back-up save and had to re-do all the painting I'd done in the last hour. Now I know to save A LOT just in case it happens again.

MysticSteph In reply to ObsidianSerpent [2013-07-28 21:01:44 +0000 UTC]
So glad you like it
I think it's a good money investment then.
And it really sucks that the program suddenly lacked of memory to work :S But it is a well known problem to Windows XP users. Windows XP can only take 4Go ram (Which is about in fact 3,75 Go ram since Windows itself needs about 0.25 ram to run if I'm correct.). Though, Windows 7 pro can take up to an infinite amount of ram. I currently have 32Go ram (for 3D rendering); so obviously I'm never going to experience those memory falls. Also make sure you have 15Go free on your hard drive. Otherwise that might be the cause of the program closing also. It's either the ram or the hard drive.
And yes; CTRL+S (save) is your best friend when it comes to digital work. Whenever it's 2D arts or even 3D works. Try to press it every 15 minutes at least. I, myself, lost numerous hours of work because of crashes in the past, mostly in 3D programs where sudden bugs are frequent (Also my old computer wasn't as powerful and the hard drive was full).

I've actually been through the computer and deleted all the programmes I don't use, and downloaded a lot of stored stuff onto a memory stick. That's opened up some space. (Though I did that BEFORE the memory fail, so obviously still not ENOUGH space. )
Yep, I'm on Windows XP (it's almost like steampunk!
)
I will be sure to save regularly, and hopefully that will save any disasters.

MysticSteph In reply to ObsidianSerpent [2013-07-28 22:28:34 +0000 UTC]
A good cleanup always helps
The risks of actually losing anything now should be reduced.
And I remember once that saving actually destroyed my work. But it was in a 3D program. My topology went insane and faces went flying everywhere in the scene. Weirdest bug I've come across lol. Never happened again though. But most likely saving will save your life.
Like I said, the memory issue could be the ram. But there isn't much you can do about it besides turn off any programs that starts at window's startup or buy more ram. Really, the best solution is to save often.
