Description
Acrylic on a postcard.Another attempt at an entry for this Radio Times competition where you have to paint a picture on a postcard and send it in. Because my attempts so far have been moderately dire, this time I tried to paint Merlin on the basis that, a) it's something that I know b) it might break this nervousness thing where I can't paint.
Hmmm...it didn't. (Though perhaps a little better than the previous three.)
(And I reiterate, thin cardboard is a CRAP surface to paint on!)

Hiya, yes I do, here... www.etsy.com/shop/PentacleArts… but there's nothing much actually in it at the moment.

No, the two others which I thought were worse, got placed. You can't work out the judgement on these things, I was already surprised on what pictures actually won. Art criticism is a law unto itself. (I'm not saying I should have won obviously, but it's so weird when one of your own things that you think is MUCH worse than another thing you've done, gets a better score....so weird!)

Weird... I think it might have something to do with who you portayed though.. more people know about Jack Nicolson and Eddie Izzard than about Colin Morgan.. which is a pity.

I think you're right with Jack Nicolson. I would agree with Eddie Izzard too, but unfortunately, (and not intentionally), the painting I did looked nothing like him. I wonder whether they chose it just to get a bit of variety into the exhibition and because a marathon runner is a bit different than lots of portraits or still-lifes of flowers etc...

Hmm that may be... well we'll never now, like you say you can never tell with judges, after all everyone has a different view of things. It's only the artist who really knows how much effort went into the piece and which one that really deserves most credit.. everything else is in the eye of the beholder.

I see that the texture is not as good as what you usually use, but this pic looks absolutely stunning. Seriously.
The first thing I see in this pic is Merlin's face expression that you're brilliantly captured it. After following your works for a while, I think you're doing very good job with the portraits, like this one.
BTW, the #3 postcard also isn't bad at all, but I just love this one more.

I agree about the texture, the paint doesn't want to stick to the shiny cardboard so it kinda lays on the top in patches rather than applying properly.
I'm glad you liked it anyway, many thanks for the kind words and encouragement.

You more than deserve to win! Your work is distinctive and you capture emotions tremendously well. I love Merlins face here, he looks upset and thoughtful and so many things at the same time. I wish you good luck in the competition and whatever happens there are loads of us that admire your work (and I wish I had a 1/4 of your talent!)

Thanks very much for the encouragement. As a painting for me, I'm not unhappy with it, (though he's a bit boss-eyed), but as a painting for a competition it's a bit pants.
I've got one more weekend before the closing date to have a last go at something, don't know what though.

Thank you. I agree, out of the four of them, it's the best one. I think, 'cause I'm so used to the subject.
I think it might work against me though...the "proper" art world is very anti-fandom. But then...I thought it might show that you can get a likeness...in which case you have to paint someone well-known, because otherwise, how do they know?
(I really don't know why I'm even wondering about it, since I already know I won't get anywhere.)
