Well from what I've read, it's usually a bad idea unless you're very experienced (can't say that I am, I still fuck my shadings up) but for me it just seems easier, at least when I make drawings with dark environment. Normally I use a solid mid-tone to fill my drawing, then add the shadows from lightest to darkest, and finally add some highlights
