I had a bathtub version that used some sort of tablets to make it swim around.

OH! I remember seeing those advertised in the back of comic's!! the tablets effervesced didn't they to propel the sub?
I had one with a crank you used to set a flywheel inside the sub spinning, then it would propel for a minute or so!
