Description Another drawing for Mosasaur Week. 78 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period of what is now New Mexico, USA (but at this time is the coast of the inland sea known as the Western Interior Seaway), the battle between predator and prey has lasted quite a while now. A Dynamoterror dynastes, a 9-meter long tyrannosaur, has spent a long time now pursuing an Invictarx zephyri, a species of nodosaurid dinosaur. The battle started at land, but as the armored dinosaur kept trying to move away from its attacker it tried evading the theropod by running down the beach and into the ocean, but the tyrannosaur has followed it anyway and keeps trying to find a way to injure the heavily armored nodosaur, which isn't easy as bony osteoderms are protecting it well. While both dinosaurs are still standing in shallow water, the Dynamoterror is standing right on the verge of an underwater ledge now, and with a wrong move it could fall into much deeper water. But that turns out to be the least of its worries when the commotion of the fight attracts a predator from the ocean. A Gnathomortis stadtmani, a large mosasaur, is unable to enter the shallower water where the dinosaurs are standing, but the tail of the tyrannosaur is now right above the deep end and the massive marine reptile lunges out to grab it. The Dynamoterror has a whole new problem now.

Dynamoterror dynastes is a tyrannosaur known only from fragmentary remains found at the Menefee Formation in New Mexico. It was described in 2018 and given the most awesomebro name possible. Ever since someone named Lythronax (meaning King of gore) people have been giving these awesomebro names to tyrannosaurs like Thanatotheristes (meaning death reaper), and Dynamoterror is the ultimate example of this. Its name doesn't mean some strange shit in Latin, it's exactly what it sounds like: Dynamic terror. Also the guy who described it is Andrew Mcdonald. Yes, it's McDonald's awesomebro named dinosaur. Anyways now that I'm done ranting on its name, it is one of the oldest known members of the Tyrannosauridae family being from the early Campanian (stuff like Guanlong are more primitive tyrannosauroids that don't fall within this family).

Invictarx is a nodosaurid ankylosaur described in 2018 from the Menefee Formation as well (in the same paper as Dynamoterror). Its name means "invincible fortress", which also sounds kinda awesomebro but compared to that tyrannosaur it lived alongside it sounds more normal. Fossil remains of three individuals are currently known and the osteoderms, a characteristic seen in all ankylosaurs, are included among those. Like all ankylosaurs, the invincible fortress would have been well defended from predators by bony scutes on its skin while it slowly moved through the foliage in search of edible plants.

Gnathomortis stadtmani is a large mosasaur that isn't known from the Menefee Formation like those two dinosaurs, but the Mancos Shale of Colorado instead. But it lived at the same time as those dinosaurs and given it could freely swim across the Western Interior Seaway, who's gonna stop it swimming around New Mexico sometimes? It's not too far. While the genus Gnathomortis was only set up in 2020, this species was already known and described back in 1999, but at the time was listed as a species of Prognathodon, P. stadtmani and only moved to its own separate genus recently. Like other mosasaurs it would have been a marine predator feeding on any animal that doesn't escape its jaws in time, and its name actually means "jaws if death". So yeah it has another one if those awesomebro names but at least this one is Latin and isn't immediately obvious in English like fucking Dynamoterror.

Also that thing on the beach is the shell of a Parapuzosia bradyi, a large ammonite, that has washed ashore.

Funny huh, my last submission was a basal tyrannosaur hunting a basal mosasaur and now we have a mosasaur hunting a tyrannosaur instead. Well well well, how the turntables.

It's also been a damn long time since I last drew a tyreophoran and this Invictarx ends that drought. And I made its back iridescent too.
