I think the shadows look good. Not too strong, to be distracting.
But does he only need protection on his left pectoral?

Damn that colour scheme  , he looks really handsome . To be nit-picky, your style of shading isn't the issue, it's great! The only concern I see is where you've shaded. I assume the light-source is what he's holding in his hand, in which case, there should be a higher contrast between the shaded areas and the areas lit up. Shading is really difficult though, and it's something I have to think hard about. You've nailed the shading in most areas, it's just in some it implies there's more than one light source.
