Description
For some time now, I've been using DAZ Studio to create references to use in my various artworks. I've found this to be an invaluable resource that has greatly expedited my ability to get these works down accurately. And recently, I decided that others might appreciate a tutorial to show how DAZ Studio can serve as an excellent tool for more traditional artists. So here's the first in a series I'll be doing...when I have a few spare seconds to rub together.Related content

That's a really creative way to get a reference that will guarantee consistency and anatomical correctness when drawing. I've tried using DAZ before, so I know it takes a while to create the model, but once it's done you can save it and use it easily for whatever poses you want.Β
It's also probably really handy for technical and complicated stuff like fighting stances and dynamic action poses.Β
As I mentioned, I tried using DAZ 3D in the past and could never get it to work right for me. And I don't mean using it. I learned how to use all tools and whatnot properly. What never worked was add on stuff. I followed every instruction, tutorial, and trouble shooting guide I could find to the letter and plug ins just refused to work for me even when I did everything perfectly. My computer just said, "NO. Go f*ck yourself." My PC is where programs come to DIE.
That aside, it seems like a very versatile tool for you, but you're totally right about developing drawing skills. DAZ can be used as a tool, but if someone relies on it too much it'll be a crutch and that would actually stunt the development of drawing skills.

Oh, you have no idea how useful DAZ has proven for really complex pics and poses. An absolute lifesaver.
Really? You weren't able to get the extras you installed to work? Hmmm...a couple questions. How long ago did you try using DAZ? Did you use the DAZ Install Manager to install said add-ons? What kind of error message did you get when things didn't work? I've done troubleshooting for other DAZ users in the past. I might be able to figure out what went wrong for you.

Offering to help is thoughtful of you and I appreciate it.Β
Unfortunately that was YEARS ago and I don't even know if I still have the program files at all. That and my laptop is old now and has overheating issues if I try to run any kind of game or media intensive programs. 3D rendering would make it go Chernobyl.
If I do try again in the future I'll be sure to ask you for advice if I run into problems.Β
You ever try anything REALLY wacky with posing 3d models?

In that case, it's time to get a new computer. There are plenty of sales for either whole computers or parts with which to build your own. They're getting cheaper all the time.
Sure, I've messed with crazy poses. Who hasn't?

If you do, then be sure to pick up the DAZ Deals Plug-In for your browser. I've found it to be a big help in ferreting out the bigger discounts. Also, be sure to learn to work the sales. Average discounts are a daily thing, but the really good deals are harder to find and you need to watch for them.

There are a few other things I feel I should mention. First off, you should really check to see what your computer's capabilities are and compare them to DAZ's requirements before trying to install anything. Second, if your computer can handle it, then there's no reason not to give it a try at any time because the software and several resources for DAZ Studio itself are 100% free. That happens to include tutorials and so on, to help you get a better feel for it. Also, there are numerous free resources that you can take advantage of, as well as discount programs if you want to buy anything. Lots of things to investigate when you have a chance.

I should have looked up the requirements first but it seems to run all right on this laptop. Everything is pretty overwhelming now, so I'd better get used to this in the early stages. Right now I'm just sticking figures on a set and twisting them around. Once I get the programs for really changing builds I'll be having a lot of fun with this!

Just be sure that whatever you download is DAZ and/or Poser compatible.

Thank you again. It's great seeing how artists will release additions for free like that. So much on the official store is so expensive...

OrionPax09 In reply to Nullation [2019-07-15 19:40:11 +0000 UTC]
That's one of the reasons you need to work the sales. A good example is this one time I was able to get $615.85 worth of assets for only $43.99. So...yeah. Over 90% off is a good deal if you ask me.
Also, be sure to routinely check the freebies on the official store. Sometimes, they release entire bundles for free, but those never last long.

Yup, and I'm grateful for the sales app you pointed out. Found a few freebies already too, so that was nice.Β
Can't wait to start creating my characters with DAZ Studio. Molly, Jessie, Maxine, Mathesis Ilm Trilby (whom will likely become my new avatar) and a host of other heroines and villains!

Excellent. And I'm glad that you got the sales app. When you start putting things on your wishlist (you know, the various morphs for muscle growth and so on), you can use that app to see which items are the highest percentage off, as well as track how the price goes up and down. Just to name a few things.
Later on down the road, you might want to join DAZ's Platinum Club. Here's a link describing how it works.Β www.daz3d.com/platinum-club-plβ¦

Why thank you! I certainly can do with a model based on the Dragon's Crown Amazon. With some modifications I'll be able to whip up an appropriate heroine in my ancient East Africa setting!

A few words of warning, First off, it's a good idea to keep track of the quality creators, both in terms of freebies and commercial vendors.Β RawArt andΒ SimonWM are two names I can recommend right off the bat. Secondly, even good products can have their soft spots, so you will learn to have to work around them.Β Third, good clothing products generally have built-in corrective morphs to help address any fit issues. So if you run into any problems with fitting a given piece of clothing, be sure to check the Parameters tab. Chances are that you'll find a few morphs that will solve said issue.
