Nifty ^_^ it's a plant type creature? I like the patterns on it's body, and the flower pods on it's back are neat, they remind me of the Angler fish.

Yeah, some sort of plant creature There are some bee-like creatures which belong together with this design, but I didn't find enough energy to draw them as well

Oh, and I know what you mean about lacking the energy to draw sometimes, I too suffer from that, happens allot... I'm currently forcing myself to work on a large commission I'm doing for someone who wants 8 character sheets (front side and back), all done with the crazy details I do,
so you can image how time consuming it is.

I started to reject commissions for the moment. I'm just too lazy and slow to being able to sell my art. Thus, and I usually don't feel good working out the ideas of others.. It feels like the picture doesn't really belong to me, which really bugged me in the end. But, on the other hand, the extra money is surely nice
What do you ask for one such a picture, if I may ask? I always find it quite difficult to find an accurate price for my art..

I know the feeling, it's not easy to keep motivation up
when working on other peoples ideas, I've been working on
a commission, 8 character sheets, their ideas, I just
have to draw what he tells me to, it can still be enjoyable though.
Pricing sucks nowadays, economic times etc, but I always charge what I feel my skills are worth,
I have a standard pricing on character's/creatures of $300 NZD,
I don't like to undercharge, anything less than $100 dollars feels like
I've wasted days of work...it does all depend on how long it takes you to complete something,
and what materials you need,
If your like me, and don't need materials because it's all digital art, best thing to do in my opinion
is roughly calculate how long it might take, an estimated hourly rate.

Hmm.. That's quite a lot. Well, for me anyways. I asked for half of the price and like you said, it didn't really worth the money Just spent too long on my pictures that it would really pay off. But, on the other hand, if I really would ask for what I work, no one would want to buy a commission from me, because it's too expensive. ..and I might feel myself more under pressure since I want to give them something which is worth their money.

Yeah, digital art is great, you never need anything other than your computer.. no need to buy new materials all the time (and you've got the 'ctrl+z' function ^^ )

Seems like allot to most people, but I'm actually quite cheap,
a freelance illustrator, asks for anywhere from $900-$5000, and that's
for just one detailed picture! if you were to live off your art, you have to
ask for that much, may seem like allot, but that's just how it goes,
you can find the rare artists who do work for very little gain, but that's usually because they
either currently work in something else and just want to do what they love to do for pocket money,
or they are trying to build a portfolio.

yeah Digital art is fantastic, glad I got into it, don't think I will never go back to doing just pencil sketches.

OrmIrian In reply to Lee99 [2012-11-03 11:32:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.. Though I find it quite hard to work as a freelance illustrator. Probably I wouldn't be good enough to work as a freelancer right now and even if.. I doubt I would want to work as one, it's just easier to have another job for financial safety and being an artist for some additional money. This way you can also focus much more on your personal works without having to worry too much about the money.

Right! Sometime I still do a pencil sketch though, because it's easier to bring your ideas on paper this way. But most of my recent art is completely made digitally

Yeah, It's hard being a freelance artist, I'm not there yet, but I'm not good at anything else,
so the idea of doing art for a living appeals to me more than working in an ordinary job.

When I sketch, I do roughs, can't seem to be bothered doing finished sketches anymore.

I read through your recent journal about this specific theme.. was quite interesting to read and certainly made me think about the whole matter. I feel like I underselled me quite a lot. That's probably also the reason why I felt kind of frustrated after each commission, feeling like they stole my time and wasn't really worth it.
Once I designed a logo for my driving school and I got a lot more money than for any other commission I ever done. Which felt unfair, since I'm not that good at designing logos and I am not enjoying it like drawing a fantasy painting. (and I needed not half as long as I need for one of my paintings!)
So I guess next time someone asks me for a commission I will try to find a fair price for me.. which is quite difficult, I have no idea how much my art is really worth.

I for my part decided to do drawing as a hobby, since I'm not really enjoy doing commissions- and sometime I'm quite unmotivated to draw anything at all.

Glad you found my journal on art pricing interesting.

Yeah sometimes you can feel a bit guilty getting allot for a commission,
especially when you don't feel confident about your skills, or you simply feel
what you produced wasn't your best, but you just need to treat it like any other job, you do some work, it takes you such and such time to complete, and then you get paid for the service you provided,
Luckily for me, I live in a family of artists, and I just look at what they get for their work,
and then I judge how much I feel I should get for my current skill level,
One of my aunties has done a few book illustrations, she got quite allot for those, more than I ask for my
commissions, it's hard, but sometime you just have to look at your work and try to decide what it is you feel you are best at,
what are you most proud of?, what do you think you can provide with your work?,
You don't have to be the best artist on the block to get decent pay, sometimes you just have to have the courage to ask for what you deserve in terms of payment for your services, let the rest take care of itself.
I've only gotten a few commissions so far, but that's because I never advertise, I'm also not a member of any other sites, but my regular client seems to come back, he's obviously happy with what I produce, so that does make me very happy.
Commissioning can be very rewarding, it has it's ups and downs, but in the long run, you still get lend your skills to the world. ^_^

Yeah, guilt is sure something I feel when asking for much, but on the other hand: You work hard for this money, as you said, it's only fair to get something in return. (even if it's not perfect- commissioners can see in your gallery what they can expect, it's quite logical that if they ask for something completely different the result might be not that fantastic).
Sometimes people just asking for a license to be able to use already finished pictures in their game or whatsoever. I find it difficult to name a fair price here. Since I finished the picture without intend to get money from it.. but those are your works after all, feels like you should ask enough for this as well. What do you think? What would be an approximate price for licensing one of your pictures? I went with 10-20US$, but I felt like give them away afterwards.. I guess something around 100 US$ would be more accurate?
Well, I think advertise myself a little bit.. but only over ways DA offers me. Like those groups. It's an easy way to get more views and watches/favs in a rather short amount of time. I'm also present on several other sites, which really increased the amounts of clients asking for a picture. Though I had to reject some, since I didn't want to draw it Some of my clients also returned for a second picture, so I guess they're happy with the results as well.
Ah well, but I guess you showed me that I really need to raise the price for my commissions. Would be far more motivating than working for such low prices, even if some clients can't afford it anymore

Lee99 In reply to OrmIrian [2012-11-07 00:34:46 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean someone's wanting to use your work for something profitable?
If someone's going to use your work for advertising/games etc, you should increase what it's worth
by allot! 4 times more, everywhere I've read online about commissions,
The artist always asks for more if the client wishes to have the license to their artwork, the client
could make money off your work, you need to take that into consideration, $10 to have the rights to your work
is way too cheap, lets say you started asking for $200 for your standard commission fees, but if you were giving the rights
of an artwork over to the client as well, you should ask for something like $600 or more.

I've had people ask me if they could use my work before, I've always turned them down, if someone who looked legit, and could prove they were a large company interested in my work, I would probably consider their offer.

OrmIrian In reply to Lee99 [2012-11-07 09:16:27 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that's what I meant.
Aww. That makes me feel kind of bad now. But I guess it isn't that terrible. Both times some of my pictures were used in some kind of card game.. and both only got the rights to use the pictures only in those games with me still having my original rights over my pictures.

What's bad if a small company/group of people is interested in using your art? When they are able to pay for the license? It maybe helps you even a little bit, if your art pops up in a game of some kind and you're even mentioned there as artist.. giving you maybe a bigger audience later on (I always thought of it as a kind of advertisement, that's why I never thought of asking more for my pictures, fearing they might say no)

Lee99 In reply to OrmIrian [2012-11-08 22:32:44 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, maybe, I think it comes down to that I find it's hard to let go of my own work for someone Else's project, I spend allot of time and thought on my own work, so it's hard to let go of it, I would rather them hire me to draw something new for them, rather than give them rights to use anything of mine.

OrmIrian In reply to Lee99 [2012-11-10 16:20:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes. This feels a little bit weird for me as well. But then again, they're paying for my works and I probably never see their game anyway- though it would interest me how they used the picture in the end.

Awesome , speaking of Bees, you should check out some of the mutated Zombies in Resident evil 6,
bug themed creatures, there's a zombie with bee abdomens (technically their more like wasp abdomens) on it's torso, along with buzzing wings! it's crazy...there's also some half spider zombies, and half human, half grasshoppers.

Really? That sounds great, I like monsters which are based on insects.. There are so many insects which looking so alien, would be great to see more of them in games!

Well... I used to roleplay a few years ago in a online text based browsergame called "The Legend of the Green Dragon", which was quite fun, but it takes a loooot of time to roleplay. Which is why I eventually stopped playing it after a while
