Story:
Deramisso was nervous. Yet again he would be riding another cat that was highly prized by his boss, and if anything went wrong, he knew that this cat would stop for nobody and nothing until she collapsed from exhaustion, even if she hurt herself. How this race was going to end, he didn't know, and if the cat decided to try to hurt any other cats, he feared the consequences.
He wasn’t all nervous, though… He had ridden this cat before in SunStorm Cattery’s traditional “Practice Junior” and she had a wonderfully smooth top speed. Horrible canter. He checked over his tacking job- again and again. Nothing could go wrong, nothing…
He looked to the cat, who was looking out the tacking stable window at the crowded warm-up ring, hopping on her front legs eagerly, lightly growling under her breath how much she would roast the competition. Deramisso thought it a good thing, but decided to pull her reigns to turn her face away from the window. He stroked her, trying to calm her tenseness. “Wait for the box” he said. “Then wait for the bell.”
The cat gave off an understanding rumble and pushed her head against Deramisso’s chest, purring for scratches and cuddles, pawing lightly at him. He laughed and scratched her dark, silvery mane. “Good girl…”
