I did this a year ago and donated it to an auction, but it never sold. When I looked at the scan I had made of it, I thought it had a vaguely Asian feel, so I added some very amateurish kanji for autumn, snow, and magpie. I had actually added them digitally at first, but it felt like cheating and looked too perfect, so I went and pulled the original drawing and added the kanji, mistakes and all, with a brush.The scene was drawn from life, after an early fall snow. I added the bird later.
Except for that, the picture was done with ballpoint pen and white gel pen, on brown paper.

That's a wonderful compliment, Damien...although I'm afraid I see SO many artists around here that are much better than I am, that I find it hard to think that someday, someone will find this picture at a garage sale and be like, "OMG it's a Glenn Mayer original!"

It can be very intimidating to see other artists who are leagues ahead of us in some form or another and then see ourselves as so far behind, but the crucial thing is to remember that they were an upstart at one point too and had to start somewhere. Let that inspire you even more on your quest of self-improvement. Though it can feel like a race, it is not; it is more like a journey. Not everyone is going to have the same start, pace, experiences, expectations, or destination, so whether someone sees your art in a garage sale or not shouldn't be dependent on how well you did versus other artists, but how well you did for yourself and the ones you wanted to share your gift with. It is in the sharing of the gift that the experience comes full circle. If someone picks the art up, it's a credit and nod to you, but you've already received your reward.
