As i said in his bio Ryder didnt picked any starter pokemon...he decided to take Growlithe the pokemon they had at home since he was close to him.
They spend long time together before Growlithe decided that he wants to be stronger...that he wants to help Ryder more so Ryder made him evolve with fire stone.
Arcanine is very caring and protective over Ryder.
