Description
Flower bract of Etlingera or Torch Ginger, one of my favorites for flower arrangements.Watercolour on Arches 300 g cold-pressed
40 x 50 cm
Torch Ginger is another one of those huge tropical plants; the bamboo-like stalks grow to a height of 6 meters (20 feet) with 2 meter long lance-shaped leaves. The flower bracts grow right from the roots on 5 foot leafless stalks. The colour in real life is bright red with a white/ pink rim, no blue involved - I took some artistic liberties here.

This is incredible Pat! I will have to study it! I adore the pallete you used, mind telling me what it is to get those very rich colours?

Thank you, dear! I'm absolutely tickled pink that you like it enough to fav..... and to "study"
- praise indeed, coming from you!
Colours used are (Winsor & Newton) Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine and, in the very dark parts, some Prussian Blue.
The borders of the petals were masked.
Come to think of it, there was an underpainting of 3 graded washes going in different directions of Aureolin Yellow, Rose Madder Genuine and Cobalt Blue. These washes were actually in preparation for a landscape I'd intended to paint on this paper, but then I changed my mind and used a smoother paper. So I had this sheet sitting around and decided to try and paint the ginger flower on it. I'm not sure but I think this underpainting sort of helped the overall look quite a bit... even if it's mostly covered up by the flower.

You are so welcome, my friend, I absolutely adore this piece! And study I will I am sure the underpainting had a lot to do with the overall effect as I know even though it doesn"t really show persay it always gives that cretain glow to a painting!

Your comment makes me very happy! Also many thanks for the
!
Spontaneous... I was really belly-aching over this one - how to paint the thing in an interesting way etc. etc.. I think the planning stage extended over 3 days, after which I'd still not made up my mind. In the end I threw caution to the wind and just plunged in - with the biggest brush I have. The result was a surprise even to myself!

Wow that is amazing ! Once again I am stunned how you can paint like that!
And also it looks like a waratah that we have in Australia.

Thank you, Emma, you are very kind!
You are right: this does indeed look a bit like a waratah, as
pointed out to me as well. I'd totally forgotten about those lovely flowers you have "Down Under"... and the waratah being the floral emblem of NSW, no less!
Actually, you guys are giving me ideas: I think I still have some sketches and stuff from a visit to Oz a few years ago.... maybe I should dig it up and see if I can finally do something with it.
