WOW, this version! The contrast and his visor thinger is awesome. And I stress that word.
Only thing I'm a bit sad about is the loss of seeing the details in the shadows... maybe a faint backlight to highlight their edges lightly might have been nice? But then the shadows might not be as strong as they are now... (I don't know much about good portraiture or lighting or w/e ). Either way, you are really jumping as you said!

Well this was a bit of a practice run before I did my dragon more than anything, so the tips are very helpful

In this picture I guess the light wouldn't be necessary, since he is kind of 'blending' into the background and it has a really cool effect. But if you were doing a bigger /less of a practice picture, I think using the rim would work better.

And I'm hoping to get really good one day. I've only used water colours a couple times in real life so jumping to computer painting is a big leap.
