A man sitting on the edge of the world sees a swallow flying in the sky. The whole scene is a metaphore of the will to cross a border to reach other places, communicate with other people and live other experiences.

Enjoy and give me feedback please, it was a one week work.

About the waterfall, too bad you let it end so sudden! I saw more people said this, so I'm not gonna repeat what they said. x'D At the other side, it looks so dynamic!

I like the expression of the man, he looks really alive as well. ^^

Great work, this is so full of detail, on first glance I thought it was a traditional piece as well. My only quip with this piece though is with the water fall running off the lip, it just kind of stops. I think that it may have looked better if you just would have trailed that down to the bottom of the piece. Just a suggestion.

well I'm happy you've notuced me only the cascade. Many others foun out 10 other problems in it, that I personally don't think there are hehe. The cascade could be a little too straight, but I wanted to create a weird vision of it in that way. I'm checking out your gallery, ou do great pieces in vector art, I never tried much on that area, but maybe I should try one or two pieces

gosh! What an enormous heap of work Nice work on the details! Patience is indeed a key virtue of art. But not wanting to spoil your effort I still see some things that are nibbling on the quality. Maybe it's just me, but somehow the perspective is bent so much that it is disquieting. If this was your intent ... well ^^ ... if not think about how fast the close distance changes to far distance. Like you got the foreground in an angle from above and still show the horizon. This works only by bending the lines of perspective. Well.. it's surreal, but shouldn't surreal show reality in a not natural way and not a different reality ? And perception of perspective is a prominent thing in the way how people see things. Ergo disquieting when it's bent

The second thing is about the waterfall. You got it drawn well detailed, but just let it end. Just like that. Why don't pick up your theme of edges and let it flow into the shapes of the clouds. Like a metaphor for the change things undertake when going over the edge. Just an idea.

Number three is about the vast green spaces. In opposition of the vast detail in certain areas you suddenly make it look like you found out you still got lots of space and have no idea what to do about it. I guess it's the curse of the bent perspective. You need both details in the front and in the back this way. Just blurring doesn't help there.

ermh.... and aren't swallows black and white ? ^^

Thanks a lot for your exhaustive comment!
I'm usually not a patience artist, so this work is one of my first tryout on long term works and also digital work (the fourth I did with tablet), I did this for a digital competition with the theme of "borders".
My main idea was to have a surreal landscape at the end of a dream-like world and a man sitting on the edge of it watching a gigantic bird flying away from this place. The concept is pretty easy to read, as the bird is the true essence of the man's will and hope to pass through that border and to fly to another place.
Said that, yes I used 2 or 3 focal points for the landscape probably inspired by Piero della Francesca landscapes (example: [link] [link] ), Piero is well known for this issue on landscapes, as the final effect seems quite weird to the viewer, cery inspiring was also De Chirico who shows us a complete distorted prospective of reality (and he was a well known surrealist painter) ([link] ). I wanted to have a distorted view of the scene almost collapsing on the true character of the scene (man and bird), and as I could see, this effect was precepted by not only one viewer, as you 're not the only one who made me notice this
When I first thought about the cascade I wanted to do as you suggested, but then I decided to make it almost straight (it's a bit angled on the left to tell the truth), as I wanted the water to disappear in the clouds more than merging with them, dunnΓ² why I did that, probably I liked this because it was more surrealistic than vaporizing.

I didn't blur the background as I hate blurring things up, but the image you see here is 1000X1000, the original is 3500X3500, so probably the details went down a lot in the resize progress, but you're right I had a lot of grass field out there and didn't know what to add...so I preferred to leave it changing a bit colours and adding some shades simulating hills, because I didn't want the left side of the painting to be bad balanced. But, you're right there's something wrong with the poor grass field.
About the swallow, yes, it's not a swallow, because the swallow has not that shape, it's more an eagle-swallow, but I loved to mix eagle wings to te swallow tail . But to tell the truth, swallows are not just black and white, not all of them at least. As I didn't have reference to copy from, I did researches at least on the colours of swallows and this is the kind of swallow I've found ([link] ).

Thanks again for your patience on that comment and I'm happy that you noticed so many things, it was very helpful to read your opinion and point of view on this work as it was really long for me to finish.
Ciao!

You are welcome Well concerning the cascade I just meant that you could have continued it after it went through the clouds. I mean it's surreal and you are right to make it different form reality. It's just that it could have been more.

About the perspective bending ... think about it being a style not a dogma But as you liked it, well I would suggest to make it stand out more! No gentle bend, but an angle in perspective, THAT would be cool surreality. Esspecially as you named your work EDGE of the world. Real edges are angles too.

Very beautiful! Such a wonderful concept, too.

I think, at best, the only problems I can see deal with perspective issues. The trees in the background, for instance - it doesn't seem like they're far away, just that they're very short. Also, the river just seems to come straight down.

The tree behind the boy seems more bumpy, I suppose, than covered with bark. The details may be too rounded, I think. It doesn't seem to bend quite right, either, going to the left like it is. It ought to be a little more vertical, I think.

There are so many wonderful details here, though. The mountains are beautiful, and the detail in the grass is quite amazing. I like that it varies in color, too - as real grass does. The clouds are very well done, though there's too much monotony there. It's almost like they're all the same sort of cloud, and all lying on just one plane. Clouds are unbelievably dynamic, and they have lives and energies of their own, when done properly. They come in so many different shapes and densities, and colours as well. I think this is an area that you can definitely continue to work and improve on (whereas the other issues would require almost fully repainting the image).

Something else to keep in mind on future projects is that shadows are also quite dynamic. The best painters use many different colours in shading alone. They can help form your mood, and add much more life to your paintings. Shadows aren't just darker, unsaturated versions of the object.

Anyway, lovely work. So many details! Keep it up ;3

You are really right on the shadows, I didn't use any complementar colours this time, probably because it's morning light and I wanted a very bright and dream-like effect, but yes, usually you have complementar colours on the shades.
About the clouds, you're right, I spent about one day making them....all day long...arghh...(no more clouds for me thanks!) and it's my first temptative to reproduce them on photoshop, so mainly I'm happy about the result. I put the clouds under the earth level 'cos I liked the view the most, probably I should have add some more layers...but I couldn't do it anymore!

Thanks again for your patience on that comment and I'm happy that you noticed so many things, it was very helpful to read your opinion and point of view on this work as it was really long for me to finish.
