Description My apologies for being absent for such a long time.
But I am back.

UPDATE
I rewrote the description.
Since I have written the original one in a hurry.
And I wasn't really satisfied with it.

So I figured I would start it over, now that I have enough time to write.

If you remember, I once had an idea for a Splatoon Side-Game, that would feature Octolings as main protagonists.
It would be a strategic Stealth-Game.
Since Nintendo did something unique with generic game concepts before, I'd be very interested to see how Nintendo would handle a full-fledged Stealth Game.
And this is the design I came up with for Advanced Octolings, that would work perfectly for a Stealth Game.
At least, in my eyes...

So this is the new form of the Octolings.
The Evolved Octoling
Sometimes also referred to as Alternate Octoling or True Octoling.

And as the text in the drawing implies, they are very different from the regular Octolings, that we know.

I decided to make something like a short Biology Chart, that would give a basic description, as well as listing the main differences from the normal Octolings.
This was inspired by and his amazing Biology Chart of the Inklings/Octolings.
Very well thought out and capturing the characteristics of real-life Squids and Octopi, while staying as true to the Game Canon as possible.
This is the Octoling-Version, which this drawing is primarily based on: rotommowtom.deviantart.com/art…
Though I decided to deviate more from the Game Canon and stick more to the abilities of real-life Octopi.

The main reason I changed the Octolings as much as I did here, is because I think the way Nintendo handles them now, doesn't really do them justice.
Right now, they are mere Inkling-Clones.
But I think they should be more than that!
I want them to be a proper representation of a real-life Octopus and a possible humanoid evolution of an Octopus.

There are three abilities of an Octopus, that stand out to me personally: Camouflage, Intelligence and Ability to Adapt!
Which would make Octolings the perfect protagonists for a Stealth-Game, I figured...

The Human Form, like the drawing says, is all about strength and endurance. And thus combat-oriented.
The body is all muscle and no bones and the inner body utilizes musclemass, water pressure and ink to function.
But because the muscles are so bulked up, they cannot bend their arms and legs freely, because of hyperextension.
They have about the same movement limits, as human arms and legs.

I designed the Human Form to be bulky to capture the tight grip of an Octopus, as well as capturing their nature as hardened warriors.
The Human Form actually uses a wide variety of agile/acrobatic moves, to gain mobility.
So they no longer have to resort to spreading Ink to be truly mobile, which over time has become a liability, hence why they abandoned it!

The Octopus Form is designed to be exactly like a Real-Life Octopus.
It has the amazing Camouflage-Abilities, the soft body that can squeeze through small openings, the ink-abilities, you name it.
On top of that, it now can easily survive and walk on land.
Though it moves rather slow on land. But for that, is very mobile in the water.
(While it is the exact opposite for the Human Form, who moves faster on land, while being slower in the water).

Canon Disagreements
This drawing should heavily imply, that I disagree with some things that the game canon has established.
The most obvious thing being, Inky Body, dissolving in water!
I never understood why Inklings and Octolings couldn't swim and would dissolve in water.
It is way too unnatural for my liking.

Another thing I disagree with, is Octarians being utterly unable to reproduce naturally and only able to create offsprings by cutting off tentacles...
IF IT APPLIES TO OCTOLINGS AS WELL!
Now granted, Octopus Tentacles living on, when severed from the Main Body, is a thing in real life.
So I have no problems with Octotroopers, etc, being created via a cut off tentacles from a host, that becomes its own independant life form.
But I do disagree with this being the only way of creating offsprings for the Octarians and Octolings being born the exact same way!

Octopi can reproduce naturally in real life.
So why in the world wouldn't they be able to do it anymore, when becoming humanoids?!

I know these things are canon.
But I turned against them despite that, because I thought these design choices were stupid!

I am no Canon-Purist!
So I have no problems ignoring canon elements and doing my own fan-created changes, if I think certain design choices are awful!

And now a few final things, that I forgot to mention:
The liquified state (mid-switching) is still somewhat weak to water and ink.
But it still can resist them better, than before.
Still, an Octoling shouldn't change forms when exposed to these elements.

Fanon Gossip Time:
Some believe this Form is the true From of the Octolings.
While other sources say both Octolings and Inklings used to be like this long ago.
And certain people believing the latter, even say that the regular Inklings and Octolings are soft-of mutations, while this Evolved Form is the true natural evolution.
Again, Canon Disagreements.
Now I get that in Splatoon, the backstory was created to serve the gameplay and not the other way around.
But since the Devs actually included a (hidden) backstory, that ties these lovable Cephalo-People to our world, I can't help but think that a lot of their traits are way too bizarre and out of this world.
I dunno, it's just how I feel...
Doesn't make the game any less fun though.

While hinted by some, it is currently unknown if Inklings can achieve a similar Form as well.
Though it is very likely they can, if they live under the same conditions, as these Octolings do.

And that's it.
See you all around.

Fantastic Work!

Really like the Detail on the Characters and the Description makes it very clear how Adaptable the Octolings have Become.
Imagine Facing these things in the game..... They'd probably be Bosses themselves!

Well probably...

But again, these Octolings are designed for a possible spin-off game, that feature them as the main characters.
Not that such a game would actually be made by me, Nintendo or anyone. It's just a concept really...

yeah, it was one of my problems with the story.Β  Your version is really good though.

It's not like the story is bad or anything.
But since it is supposed to take place in our world, there are things that feel unnatural.
And it would've worked better, if Splatoon would've been in a different world, with its own crazy rules.

But again, it's clear that everything story-related in Splatoon, were all afterthoughts.
The gameplay was the top priority, and the plot was made to serve the gameplay.
And it shows...

The game is still great.
And these issues I have, don't really make the game any worse.

Thanks for the kind words though.
I appreciate it.

yeah.Β  I only had a couple of issues with it my self, but they don't make the story bad or anything.

You're welcome.

Well, my "science" is not exactly canon, even though I try to go with canon as much as possible...
But thank you.

You're very welcome
and technically you're right. But this is what I considered sci-fi info
and I LOVE sci-fi! It intriques the intelligent with fictional information, with reference to real science in their respective branches.
And OCtoling Files, the series, is an excellent example! ^^
