Description
This tutorial explains how a buyer and an artist can set up payment using deviantART's Commission Widget. Through this process, the artist receives CASH through PayPal. The artist DOES NOT receive any points. There is a two week delay between when the buyer sends payment and when the artist receives the funds through PayPal.
If you see any typos, please let me know
As you can see, this process is needlessly complicated. To see a proposal for a far simpler system, refer to:

Again, I don't know what "won't let me add examples" means. Are you getting an error?

Oh, you're using the "Edit Page" button at the top right of your profile page, chosing "Edit Widget" from the drop down for the Commission Widget and then clicking the pencil icon next to your commission offer.
Instead, add the commission widget to your profile page and refresh your profile page in your browser. Scroll down your page to the Commission Widget and click the pencil icon displayed on the widget at the top right and choose "Edit this Widget". From there click the pencil icon for your commission offer and you should see a section listed for you to add images.
There do appear to be a few bugs with the widget, I'll file a help desk ticket.

reload the page maybe? log out and log back in, that could work. or just delete the widget and put it back afterwards? if none of these work talk to someone in the team!

Hello! Thank you so much for this tutorial, it's very helpful!
I have some questions I just want cleared up, if that's alright.
Say I charge the person commissioning me 3400 points through the commission widget. This means that in USD, it'll convert to $34.
1. dA does not take 20% of the $34, do they?
2. How much can I expect dA to deduct when I transfer it to my PayPal account? (I know PayPal's deduction differs per total income)
3. Can I delete the commission widget details before the two weeks are cleared without risk of the points being refunded?
Thank you for your time!

1. It costs $42.50 for the buyer to get 3400 points. For a 3400 point commission, you receive $34. DA's 20% cut is embedded in the transaction rates.
2. DA would send $34 to PayPal and then PayPal would add their own processing fees.
3. That last one I'm not sure on. I can check when I have more time. Is this something you're still curious about? (sorry for the long delay)

Thank you very much! I am still curious about the last one (no worries on the delay!) but it's not urgent, so it's alright if you don't get around to it. I decided to remove the widget from my page but not delete the specifics just in case. Again, thanks for the reply!

hiya!! sorry to be annoying but is there any other way to convert points to money apart from the commission widget?
for example, if you make adoptables and recieve payment through the donation box, is there any way to turn that into RL money?

parallellogic In reply to VanillaHowl [2015-10-05 09:01:58 +0000 UTC]
No, just converting points to cash is forbidden by the ToS. Selling premium content and Commissions are the only way to receive cash, but you need to ensure you've set up the transaction (Commission widget, etc) to accept and convert the currency. You could return the points and instruct them to use the Commission widget if you are creating artwork for that user.

If I want to sell pictures that I've already done, can I use the commission widget as a way to sell them?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
parallellogic In reply to Kazu-Arts [2015-08-10 17:57:42 +0000 UTC]
For that I'd recommend uploading your work with "Premium Content" enabled through the standard "Submit" process. That allows users to all download the same piece of work without you having to manage each transaction.

hello there! thank you for your tutorial, it helps me so much with my previous commission X"DD
and now I wanna ask you something. So my previous commission is closed now (and I have 10 list of it--I mean, the maximum list to add to the comm.widget) so I remove this widget from my dA.
but since I need some cash, I wanna open another simple commission and using commission widget again. then I edit my page and install it and somehow my previous commission list are still there.
is there any way to remove those lists? I really want to open another commission but I'm pretty new about commission widget so I don't really understand how to delete those lists D":
thank you so much and sorry if my English is not-so-understandable since it's not my mother-language D"X

After you add the widget to your profile page, refresh the page. Then you should be able to use the pencil icon at the top right of the widget to "edit thhis widget". From there there should be "x" options to delete existing commission offers.

Question: If someone pays you points to request a commission, do you HAVE to convert the points into real money, or can you just keep them to spend elsewhere?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
parallellogic In reply to Jolycie [2015-07-14 07:00:07 +0000 UTC]
If someone commissions you for 10 points, you can extract 8 points and use them as points. As discussed at the beginning of the above tutorial, it is better to use the Donation Widget in that case.

I have a question
It says you need a total of 500 points in your account?? to withdraw with paypal? so now I cant convert the 2000 points in 20$ now?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
parallellogic In reply to CatNamedFallen [2015-07-12 19:18:30 +0000 UTC]
You need to accept some number of commissions to add up to at least 500 points to make a PayPal withdrawl. Simply having a "balance" of 2000 points can't be converted to PayPal unless it is part of your "earnings".

If you already accepted it you're going to need to ask the help desk since I think only the staff can reverse the payment at that point.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
parallellogic In reply to Angee8 [2015-07-03 01:53:44 +0000 UTC]
Well, you need 500 points in your commission balance to get the minimum of $5 in PayPal (minus PayPal processing fees). You can take multiple commissions to get to reach that balance. Commissions can go down to 10 points each.

for the pricing of commissions, when I was editing the widget I set the price to 400 and it tells me that it is $4.00, but when I click save and look at the widget, it says 400 points. Does this mean that I am selling it for 400 points or cents because right now I'm confused...

You currently have the Commission Widget on your page with a "Request Commission for 30 points" button. The button will appear for everyone except yourself since you cannot commission yourself.

Premium members will have to pay just for the paypal fee?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
parallellogic In reply to creusa [2015-05-18 10:32:27 +0000 UTC]
There's two fees, the fees PayPal imposes on all transactions (around 3% or so) and the fees DA imposes on commissions (20%). The DA fee is extracted from all payments made through the Commission Widget, premium member or otherwise.
