well, if you don't know what areas need shading you can start by looking at references. photo's are the most realistic of course, but that might be a bit problematic with dragons... though there are tons of dragon movies and artwork you could use, or pictures of lizards or something. Just look at them and watch where the light and dark areas are. I think it's easier to turn the reference pics into grey scale, because colour can be really a distraction sometimes. That's also the case for drawing by the way; I often start in grey scale when lighting is difficult, and colour it later. Always keep in mind where the source of light is, or sources, there is often more than one. you can draw little suns or light rays to help you find the illuminated parts of your character/scene/whatever it is you are drawing, that helps a lot.

I am less of a help if you are struggling more with (traditional) shading techniques, because I don't know that much tips and tricks... Anyway, do you use a stumper (is that what those things are called in English?) for your pencil drawings? It makes shading large areas much easier. Mine ran away, I miss it so much what you also can do is use an eraser for highlights. Colour everything, and use the eraser to lighten up the illuminated parts of your drawing. it will never get as bright as the original paper though, so be careful with it.

Okay ^^, so I can start by looking at references, turn it to gray scale and think about where the light source is, am I right ^^?
And for the "stumper" (I don't know how it's called in English too, but I do know what it can do .) I never use it before and I don't know where I can buy it and eraser highlight trick is really interesting .

And I am really thank you for your help , now time to try shading technique . Thank you soooo much

yes, that's right! Oh, you might also take a look at different materials; metal reflects light in a completely different way than fabric for example.

In Dutch it's called a 'doezelaar', but I checked and it's indeed a stumper in English (though I do not get a lot of good hits when I google it...) You can buy them in artists/craft/hobby shops... but you can also use a cotton swab! I have never used that, it's a tip I just found on the internet Rubbing a tissue paper over your drawing can cause the same effect too, but it doesn't work that well and it isn't very precise.

good luck with shading! I am glad I could be of help
