Description: Africa's largest members of the dog family, rivaled against the Eurasian graey wolf(Canis lupus) for being the 2nd largest wild dogs. It is closely related to dholes, it is among the most social wild dogs, and unlike dholes, they have their designed patterns of splotchy spots on their coats. Their colors are yellowish, with black, grayish brown, and white. Their muzzles and throat patches are as blackish as their patterns, to make these dogs looked like striped hyenas and spotted greyhounds with honey badger faces. Some wild dogs had whitish tail tips, to make these identical to each other, but some others had no whites on their tail-tips. Their packs are consisted of large numbers of adult dogs, few of their puppies, all lead by either a male, female, or a breeding pair. Their societies are similar to lions, hyenas, baboons, chimps, and gorillas. The rarest social units for A.W.D's are solitary, and a family group that's consisted of mother, father, and puppies. The African wild dogs are complete rivals to lions, leopards, spotted and brown hyenas, and rarely baboons. Lions dominated the AWDs, because lions steal the dholes' kills. Speaking of lions being scavengers over the dhole and hyenas' kills, the African wild dogs are one of the animals in the Endangered Species List, which South, East, and Somali wild dogs are still Endangered species, while Chadian and West African wild dogs are classified as Critically Endangered species, due to their poor populations in Western and Central parts of Africa. In old times, the AWDs are mistakened as they are the most doglike of all hyenas, but genetic studies says that AWDs are actually parts of the dog family, while the hyenas are parts of the cat family, which the hyenas are close relatives to mongooses and fossas.
