Description: If you have a ferret as a household pet, then you should know that domestic ferrets are living and tame descendants to wild polecats. It is one of the largest species of Mustela in Europe, which these nocturnal mustelids are similar to weasels, but their faces are whitish with black masks, blackish colors on their limbs and tail tip. They are inactive at winter, but they became more active from springtime to autumn. Wild ferrets are much more solitary than their domestic descendants, except for a bond between mother and her five to ten kits. So why did people tame these ferrets, since the medieval Europe? Because we use ferrets to control the populations of the pests, like rabbits, rats, and mice for example. Domestic ferrets can be used for being pets, hunting, pest control, show, and even racing. They can cripple their prey, by piercing their brains with their teeth and stores it, still living, in its burrow for future consumption. They are closely related to most weasels, steppe polecats, American black-footed ferrets, and the critically endangered European minks. They are less territorial, and less agile than most weasels, due to their size and social units. During modern times, the polecat is still scantly represented in popular culture when compared to other rare British mammals, and misunderstandings of its behaviour still persist in some rural areas.
