Description: The best known species of eared seals, California sea lions are native to the beaches in the western North America. They are extremely social in large rookeries, where they lead by the heaviest and largest males, who are beach masters, like that of elephant seals. They can even hunt prey on water, which they sometimes cooperate with their neighbors, like dolphins, porpoises, and seabirds, to help them catch prey. California sea lions swim using their fore-flippers and are particularly agile on land as they are able to control their hind flippers independently. They had the most sexual dimorphism, which males and females can be told apart, males are bigger, muscular, and more fatter and had larger saggital crests than females. We do see the sea lions in zoos, marine parks, and even circuses, where they can perform tricks, like holding, catching, and throwing the balls with their noses, running up on ladders, or honking on horns. Trainers reward their animals with fish, which motivates them to perform. For ball balancing, trainers toss a ball at a sea lion so it may accidentally balance it or hold the ball on its nose, thereby gaining an understanding of what to do. A sea lion may go through a year of training before performing a behavior for the public. However, its memory allows it to perform a behavior even after three months of resting. But unfortunately, Humane Society claims that the tricks that using the marine mammals for entertainment is extremely exaggerated. In some zoos, people may still encourage animal play by throwing fish at animals in different directions and providing play equipment. Before mating begins, females gather into "milling" groups of 2–20 individuals. The females in these groups will mount each other as well as the males. These groups begin to disintegrate as the females begin to mate. The territorial and mating system of the California sea lion has been described as similar to a lek system, as females appear to choose their mates while moving though different territories. Predators, besides humans and other sea lions, are great white sharks and killer whales.
